Systems methodology and design

IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, 1985
Traditional and modern ways of handling engineering design problems are compared, and key issues that systems methodology and design (SMD) should address are developed. A review of several traditional sciences and disciplines (e.g. psychology, mathematics, philosophy) shows that SMD can be enhanced and extended to help improve the results obtained.

Designing a DRM System

2008 The Fourth International Conference on Information Assurance and Security, 2008
The digital rights management (DRM) systems aim at protecting and enforcing the legal rights associated with the use of digital content distributed on the Internet. Most of such systems use watermarking techniques to implement the content protection. Although the effectiveness of the implemented protection strictly depends on the adopted watermarking ...

Designing a system on a chip

Proceedings of the June 1970 design automation workshop on Design automation - DAC '70, 1970
The rapidly improving capabilities of large scale integrated circuit (LSI) manufacturing technology provide the opportunity for dramatic advances in digital system economy, capacity and flexibility for those who are prepared to modify their design philosophy and procedures to take full advantage of it. This involves much more than the simple first step

System design for usability

Communications of the ACM, 1981
The factors underlying system design for usability are examined and the role and responsibilities of a usability committee described. Under the control of a usability committee, a balance between high levels of system function and usability was reached for the IBM System/38. The System/38 command language is presented to illustrate this balance.

Contracts for System Design

Foundations and Trends® in Electronic Design Automation, 2018
Recently, contract-based design has been proposed as an “orthogonal” approach that complements system design methodologies proposed so far to cope with the complexity of system design. Contract-based design provides a rigorous scaffolding for verification, analysis, abstraction/refinement, and even synthesis.

Memory system design

Microprocessors, 1978
Abstract Rapid advances in semiconductor technology and LSI in particular, have meant that in recent years electronic products have aged prematurely thus losing their cost and technical edges in the marketplace. Product-development methods have therefore had to adjust to counteract and capitalize on this situation.

Logic Design System

Proceedings of the June 1971 design automation workshop on Design automation - DAC '71, 1971
The Logic Design System (LDS) is a set of FORTRAN Computer programs that convert Boolean equations and component descriptions into logic diagrams, parts lists, board layouts, wiring lists, and diagnostic data. This system decreases the cost of digital design work and eliminates errors that could be introduced by manual methods.

On the complexity of system designs

International Journal of Intelligent Defence Support Systems, 2008
A 'design archetype' is a characterisation of the possible designs that a given system design approach can generate. The central concern is the need for flexible and structurally scalable design approaches. The design archetype is a pattern for generating system designs of arbitrary scale; design approaches cannot not scale well that do not ...

Designing Conscious Systems

Cognitive Computation, 2009
This paper reviews computational work that is currently developing under the heading of ‘Machine Consciousness’ and sets out to provide a guide for those who wish to contribute to this field. First, questions of philosophical concern as to the appropriateness of this activity are raised and discussed.

The design of a meta-system

Proceedings of the May 18-20, 1971, spring joint computer conference on - AFIPS '71 (Spring), 1971
The design and implementation of multiprogrammed, time-sharing computer systems continues long after the system is put to use. A tool is needed that will measure and evaluate the computer system while it is in operation, as an aid to further development or optimization for a particular usage.
