Comparative Evaluation of Hemodiafiltration, Hemoperfusion, and Standard Hemodialysis on Efficacy, Inflammatory Control, Dialysis Adequacy, and Safety in End‐Stage Renal Disease: A Prospective Observational Study

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Chronic micro‐inflammation in patients with end‐stage renal disease (ESRD) is a significant driver of cardiovascular complications and diminished quality of life. While standard hemodialysis (SHD) effectively manages small‐molecule clearance, its ability to remove medium‐to‐large uremic toxins—the primary catalysts of systemic ...

Microglia and macrophages of the central nervous system: the contribution of microglia priming and systemic inflammation to chronic neurodegeneration [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Microglia, the resident immune cells of the central nervous system (CNS), play an important role in CNS homeostasis during development, adulthood and ageing.

House Dust Mite Nebulization Drives Alarmin and Complement Activation in a Murine Tracheal Air–Liquid Interface Culture System

open access: yesCells
Air–liquid interface (ALI) cultures offer a physiologically relevant in vitro model of the airway epithelium (AE), capable of recapitulating key structural and functional features observed in vivo. In this study, we established and validated a murine ALI

Anti-rhesus D prophylaxis in pregnant women is based on sialylated IgG antibodies [v1; ref status: indexed, http://f1000r.es/1fg]

open access: yesF1000Research, 2013
Red blood cells (RBCs) from a rhesus D (RhD)-positive fetus that reach the bloodstream of an RhD-negative pregnant woman during birth can induce a pathogenic antibody (Ab) response against the RhD-positive RBCs, leading to fetal hemolytic disease in ...

Systemic Inflammation Response Index and Systemic Immune Inflammation Index for Predicting Acute Cholecystitis

open access: yesIndian Journal of Medical Specialities, 2023
Objective: Acute cholecystitis (AC) is a condition caused by acute inflammation of gallbladder. Many inflammatory markers are frequently used in the diagnostic process. In this study, we wanted to show the diagnostic efficacy of the systemic inflammatory

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Therapeutic targeting of alternative pathway and C5 but not C5a protects from disease development in a preclinical model of autoimmune blistering dermatosis

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology
IntroductionEpidermolysis Bullosa Acquisita (EBA) is an autoimmune blistering dermatosis characterized by autoantibodies (AAbs) against type VII collagen (COL7) located at the dermal epidermal junction (DEJ).

The Systemic Inflammation Index on Admission Predicts In-Hospital Mortality in COVID-19 Patients

open access: yesMolecules, 2020
Background. The rapid onset of a systemic pro-inflammatory state followed by acute respiratory distress syndrome is the leading cause of mortality in patients with COVID-19.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.
