RuAl Thin‐Film Deposition by DC Magnetron Sputtering

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 3, February 2025.
The synthesis and influence of deposition parameters on the corresponding microstructure of single‐phase RuAl in B2 structure is examined via transmission electron microscopy analysis and X‐ray diffraction with additional pole figure measurements. These are correlated to mechanical properties of the magnetron‐sputtered thin films.

The Quantum Szilard Engine: Interactions, Impurities and Dynamics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
In this thesis, different aspects of the quantum Szilard engine are studied using the configuration interaction method. The engine is modelled as a one-dimensional infinite well.

A many-body Szilard engine with giant number fluctuations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
Szil\'ard's information engine is a canonical example in the field of thermodynamics of information. We realize experimentally a macroscopic many-particle Szil\'ard engine that consists of active particles and use it to lift a mass against gravity.

Deep learning‐based training data augmentation combined with post‐classification improves the classification accuracy for dominant and scattered invasive forest tree species

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, Volume 10, Issue 2, Page 203-219, April 2024.
This manuscript represents improved thematic accuracy for mapping two invasive tree species (black locust and Ailanthus tree) by using hyperspectral imagery. The novelty of our work is the comprehensive statistical evaluation, including feature extraction, training data augmentation (TDA), classification with machine learning algorithms and post ...

Mechanical work extraction from an error-prone active dynamic Szilard engine

open access: yesSciPost Physics
Isothermal information engines operate by extracting net work from a single heat bath through measurement and feedback control. In this work, we analyze a {realistic} active Szilard engine operating on a single self-propelled particle by means of steric ...

Yield and cost–benefit analyses for apple scab sanitation practices in integrated and organic apple management systems

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 6, Issue 2, Page 470-489, March 2024.
Reduced fungicide use lowers environmental pollution and enable safer food production. The usage of fungicides can be reduced by applications of sanitation practices, which decrease the inoculum sources of apple scab disease on fallen leaves. Our study showed that two non‐chemical sanitation practices, namely the collection of fallen leaves ‘CFL’ and ...

Measurement and Particle Statistics in the Szilard Engine

open access: yes, 2012
A Szilard Engine is a hypothetical device which is able to extract work from a single thermal reservoir by measuring the position of particles within the engine. We derive the amount of work that can be extracted from such a device in the low temperature limit.

A quantitative information measure applied to texture perception attributes during mastication

open access: yesJournal of Texture Studies, Volume 55, Issue 1, February 2024.
An information measure was calculated of experimentally determined temporal dominance of sensations (TDS) frequencies of texture attributes, throughout the mastication cycle. The information measure follows an average curve, different for different food categories.

Fluoxetine exerts anti‐inflammatory effects on human epidermal keratinocytes and suppresses their endothelin release

open access: yesExperimental Dermatology, Volume 33, Issue 1, January 2024.
Abstract Fluoxetine is a safe antidepressant with remarkable anti‐inflammatory actions; therefore, we aimed to investigate its effects on immortalized (HaCaT) as well as primary human epidermal keratinocytes in a polyinosinic‐polycytidylic acid (p(I:C))‐induced inflammatory model.

Accuracy of energy measurement and reversible operation of a microcanonical Szilard engine [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 2014
In a recent paper [Vaikuntanathan and Jarzynski, Phys. Rev. E {\bf 83}, 061120 (2011), arXiv:1105.1744] a model was introduced whereby work could be extracted from a thermal bath by measuring the energy of a particle that was thermalized by the bath and manipulating the potential of the particle in the appropriate way, depending on the measurement ...
