Exploring the Consequences of Parents' Trust and Distrust of Social Workers in Child Welfare Services: Social Workers' Perspectives in Finland

ABSTRACT In this article, we explore the consequences of parents' trust and distrust of social workers in child welfare services. We collected data via qualitative surveys administered in 2022, to which 29 Finnish social workers responded. We used thematic analysis to identify the key themes of the consequences of trust in our data.

Threats to and management of Natura 2000 protected areas relative to agricultural practices

Abstract The Natura 2000 (N2K) network combines biodiversity protection and socioeconomic targets. Human activities, such as agricultural practices, can affect biodiversity in N2K sites in diverse ways. Limiting activities with negative impacts while enforcing land management that supports biodiversity is crucial for effective conservation.

Clinical and genetic characterization of intellectual disability

This study examines the etiological factors and comorbidities in a large cohort of Finnish patients with intellectual disability. Genetic causes—including chromosomal abnormalities and pathogenic gene variants—were more frequently identified in individuals with moderate to profound intellectual disability.

Newly identified properties of known pharmaceuticals and myxobacterial small molecules revealed by screening for autophagy modulators

Autophagy is a cellular degradation process involved in, for example, immune responses to pathogens and neurodegeneration. To identify modulators of autophagy, we developed a microscopy‐based screening assay and identified previously unknown autophagy‐modulating activities in known drugs and natural products from myxobacteria and fungi.

A noncanonical role for Jagged1 in endothelial mechanotransduction

The FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
This study reveals a noncanonical role for Jagged1 in endothelial mechanotransduction. Shear stress modulates Jagged1 expression and subcellular localization. Loss of Jagged1 attenuates mechanotransduction and reduces Src, VEGFR2, and ERK signaling. Direct mechanical stimulation of Jagged1 induces activation of these signaling pathways.
