Estimations of the T-stress for small cracks at notches
Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2004The T-stress is increasingly being recognized as an important additional stress field characterizing parameter in the analysis of cracked bodies. Using T-stress as the constraint parameter, the framework of failure assessments including the constraint effect has been established; and the effect of T-stress on fatigue crack propagation rate has been ...

T-stress and its implications for crack growth
Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2002Abstract Some of the “irregular” crack growth behaviour observed in different specimen geometries may not be unrelated. Discrepancies in fatigue crack growth rate have been observed in different specimen geometries of the same material; crack front “tunnelling” and out-of-plane crack growth have been found in mode I tension at elevated temperature ...

The T-stress along a 3-D straight crack
Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2018Abstract The T-stress in a three dimensional elastic domain containing a straight crack is considered. First the complete asymptotic expansion in the vicinity of the crack front, including the T-stress, is presented explicitly. Having obtained the asymptotic expansion, we compute the dual solution associated with the T-stress, and prove it must ...

T-stress related to thermal residual stresses in bimaterials
Scripta Metallurgica et Materialia, 1993Non-singular T-stresses have been shown to influence small scale yielding (1) and crack paths for curved cracks (2). Thermal residual stresses and remote mixed-mode loading are principal sources of T-stress in composites (3). T-stress acting parallel to a bimaterial interface has been derived explicitly for the case in which the free surface ...

T-stress and crack path stability of DCDC specimens
International Journal of Fracture, 2003The T-stress term of DCDC specimens is computed using the Boundary Collocation procedure and limit case consideratons. This parameter allows to understand path stability as found in literature for subcritical crack growth in galss.

Effect of T-stress on dislocation emission in iron
Scripta Materialia, 2004We compare continuum predictions for dislocation emission from a crack tip loaded under mode I, biaxial conditions with atomistic results for bcc iron. The simulations validate the continuum prediction that, as the T -stress increases, so does the threshold for dislocation nucleation; hence, the propensity for brittle response increases.

Effect of the T-Stress in Microcrack Shielding Problems
Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1998The effect of the T-stress in microcrack shielding problems is studied by solving the interaction problem of a macrocrack with near tip microcracks applying a discrete model. The T-stress has no effect on the results for the parallel microcrack cases; however, it plays an important role for the oriented microcrack cases, especially for large values of ...

Evaluation of T-stress for cracks in elastic sheets
Structural Engineering and Mechanics, 2005The T-stress of cracks in elastic sheets is solved by using the fractal finite element method (FFEM). The FFEM, which had been developed to determine the stress intensity factors of cracks, is re-applied to evaluate the T-stress which is one of the important fracture parameters.

Friction-induced bridging effects caused by the T-stress
Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1998Abstract The R-curve behaviour of ceramic materials is often caused by friction-induced bridging effects between the crack faces. The related bridging stresses are commonly assumed to be material specific properties. It will be shown in this paper that the bridging stress relation depends on the specimen geometry and the loading mode.
