Cancer‐associated fibroblasts (CAFs) promote cancer growth, invasion (metastasis), and drug resistance. Here, we identified functional and diverse circulating CAFs (cCAFs) in patients with metastatic prostate cancer (mPCa). cCAFs were found in higher numbers and were functional and diverse in mPCa patients versus healthy individuals, suggesting their ...

Big Outliers Versus Heavy Tails: what to use? [PDF]
A possibility to give strong mathematical definitions of outliers and heavy tailed distributions or their modification is discussed. Some alternatives for the notion of tail index are proposed. Key words: outliers, heavy tails, tail index.

When Does the Gittins Policy Have Asymptotically Optimal Response Time Tail? [PDF]
We consider scheduling in the M/G/1 queue with unknown job sizes. It is known that the Gittins policy minimizes mean response time in this setting. However, the behavior of the tail of response time under Gittins is poorly understood, even in the large-response-time limit.

Effects of Breeding for Short‐Tailedness in Sheep on Parameters of Reproduction and Lamb Development
Background Sheep's tail docking is a widespread practice, which is banned or critically discussed in some countries to improve animal welfare. Objective The aim was to determine the influence of breeding for short‐tailedness (ST) or long‐tailedness (LT ...

A comparative study of circulating tumor cell isolation and enumeration technologies in lung cancer
Lung cancer cells were spiked into donor blood to evaluate the recovery rates of the following circulating tumor cell (CTC) enrichment technologies: CellMag™, EasySep™, RosetteSep™, Parsortix® PR1, and Parsortix® Prototype systems. Each method's advantages and disadvantages are described.

Long-tailed Recognition by Learning from Latent Categories [PDF]
In this work, we address the challenging task of long-tailed image recognition. Previous long-tailed recognition methods commonly focus on the data augmentation or re-balancing strategy of the tail classes to give more attention to tail classes during the model training.

This paper presents a new algorithm making use of kurtosis, which is a statistical parameter, to distinguish the seismic signal generated by a person's footsteps from other signals. It is adaptive to any environment and needs no machine study or training.

Asymptotic power-law tails of massive scalar fields in Reissner-Nordstr\"{o}m background
We investigate dominant late-time tail behaviors of massive scalar fields in nearly extreme Reissner-Nordstr\"{o}m background. It is shown that the oscillatory tail of the scalar fields has the decay rate of $t^{-5/6}$ at asymptotically late times.

TENET: Tail-Event Driven NETwork Risk
CoVaR is a measure for systemic risk of the networked financial system conditional on institutions being under distress. The analysis of systemic risk is the focus of recent econometric analyses and uses tail event and network based techniques.

mTAIL-seq reveals dynamic poly(A) tail regulation in oocyte-to-embryo development
Here, Lim et al. report a new version of TAIL-seq (mRNA TAIL-seq [mTAIL-seq]) with enhanced sequencing depth for mRNAs (by ∼1000-fold compared with the previous version).
