Dual-Objective Control of Maximum and Residual Drift Ratios of Super-Tall Buildings Based on Self-Centering Energy Dissipation Outriggers

open access: yesFrontiers in Materials, 2022
It is critical to ensure the seismic resilience of super-tall buildings using high performance materials. The seismic resilience of these buildings can be enhanced by simultaneously controlling the maximum and residual inter-story drift ratios.

Wind loads on Y plan shape tall building [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
An experimental study was carried out on the models of lsquoYrsquo plan shape tall building in an open circuit wind tunnel to investigate the wind loads generated on the building in isolated as well as interference condition.

Speckle‐Engineered Upconversion Amplification in Nanoemulsion‐Templated Hydrogel Microdomes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Nanoemulsion‐confined PEGDA microdomes generate speckle‐like excitation fields that strongly amplify upconversion luminescence upon dehydration, enabling filter‐free visible readout with reversible on–off switching. DMD‐based lithography yields scalable, shape‐programmable arrays for moisture‐responsive displays and optical encryption.

Creating sustainable cities one building at a time: towards an integrated urban design framework [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
One of the tenets of urban sustainability is that more compact urban forms that are more densely occupied are more efficient in their overall use of space and of energy.

Assembly of Cell‐Seeded 3D Printed Hydrogel Modules with Perfusable Channel Networks

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Macroscale assembly was utilized to prepare perfusable tissue constructs from individually 3D printed hydrogel modules with embedded branched channel networks and port arrays for cell seeding. Novel multi‐material bioreactors were fabricated to facilitate the gluing of individual modules and the perfusion culture of assembled modular constructs seeded ...

The Role of Tall Buildings in Sustainable Urban Composition—The Case of Hanza Tower in Szczecin (Poland)

open access: yesArts
Tall buildings are a unique category of architectural objects, as they are characterized by a strong self-presentation effect and have a significant visual impact on the urban composition and the surrounding cityscape.

Wind Effects on Re-Entrant Wing Faces of Plus Plan-Shaped Building

open access: yesBuildings, 2023
The wind flow patterns and pressure distribution around a plus-shaped building are significantly influenced by re-entrant corner dimensions and building height.

The vertical city: the price of land and the height of buildings in Chicago 1870-2010 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We analyze the determinants of building heights in Chicago by combining a micro-geographic data set on tall buildings with a unique panel of land prices covering 140 years.

Ultimate capacity of diagrid systems for tall buildings in nominal configuration and damaged state [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
One of the evocative structural design solutions for tall buildings is recently embraced by the diagrid (diagonal grid) structural system. Diagrid, with a perimeter structural configuration characterized by a narrow grid of diagonal members involved both

The Floor‐Ceiling‐Chip, or 2 × 2D = Pseudo‐3D—Approaching 3D Cell Morphology and Organization between Two Opposing 2D Substrates with Cell‐Adhesive Protein Micropatterns

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Here, we present a novel 3D cell patterning and culture platform. The “Floor‐Ceiling‐Chip” (FC‐Chip) consists of two opposing track‐etched membranes, creating a pseudo‐3D microenvironment for the cells in between. By providing the membranes with micropatterned cell‐adhesive islands of varying geometries and sizes, the FC‐Chip enables control over cell ...
