The Structuring Role of Rhodolith Beds on Meiobenthic Communities in the Mediterranean Sea

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 35, Issue 2, February 2025.
ABSTRACT Rhodolith beds are globally distributed structurally complex habitats formed by the aggregation of unattached forms of non‐geniculate coralline red algae. They provide key ecosystem functions and services, supporting feeding, settlement and nursery provision for several species.

High Meiofaunal and Nematodes Diversity around Mesophotic Coral Oases in the Mediterranean Sea [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Although the mesophotic zone of the Mediterranean Sea has been poorly investigated, there is an increasing awareness about its ecological importance for its biodiversity, as fish nursery and for the recruitment of shallow water species.

Lengths of Stay and Stopover Strategies of Western Sandpipers During Migration at Two Sites in British Columbia, Canada

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 1, January 2025.
Stopover duration (length of stay, LOS) is a key variable in avian migration ecology that reflects behavioral decisions to obtain fuel or continue travel between breeding and non‐breeding areas. We find the LOS of Western Sandpipers differs between two important stopover sites on the Pacific Coast of Canada, reflecting different migration strategies ...

New Tanaidacea (Crustacea: Peracarida) from the Gulf of Guinea [PDF]

open access: yesMarine Biodiversity, 2017
Four new species of deep-sea Tanaidacea taken from the Gulf of Guinea as part of the Ghanaian marine environmental monitoring programme in 2012 are described. One of the species, which was classified to the family Anarthruridae, differed substantially from the other members of the family, and was accommodated to the newly erected genus – Olokun n. gen.

Faunal Composition of the Sumisu Caldera Hydrothermal Vent Field as a Key Baseline for Conservation in Light of Deep‐Sea Mining

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 34, Issue 11, November 2024.
ABSTRACT Hydrothermal vents are biodiversity hotspots on the deep seafloor powered by chemosynthetic primary production, inhabited by a specially adapted fauna whose composition varies between regions. Sumisu Caldera, located approximately 500 km south of Tokyo, hosts a hot vent with an unusual species composition among the Izu–Ogasawara Arc sites and ...

First observations on diet and feeding strategy of boarfish, Capros aper (Actinopterygii: Perciformes: Caproidae), in the eastern Ionian Sea (central Mediterranean) [PDF]

open access: yesActa Ichthyologica et Piscatoria, 2018
The presently reported study provides first and preliminary information on the feeding strategy and diet of boarfish, Capros aper (Linnaeus, 1758), in the eastern Ionian Sea (central Mediterranean). The sampling was carried out using the oceanographic RV

Spatial and seasonal changes of brackish peracaridan assemblages and their relation to some environmental variables in two tidal channels of the Ria de Aveiro (NW Portugal) [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
The shallow-water fauna of 2 main channels in the Ria de Aveiro (Canal de Ovar and Canal de Mira) was sampled between June 1995 and June 1996 using a suprabenthic sled.

Body size mediates trophic interaction strength of novel fish assemblages under climate change

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, Volume 93, Issue 6, Page 705-714, June 2024.
We show how body size similarity between range‐extending tropical and sympatric temperate fishes in a global hotspot of climate warming mediates their degree of diet similarity. Our results suggest a strengthening of these novel trophic interactions as warming is set to further reduce body size differences between these species.
