To the Editor.— I agree with Morison, 1 when he comments on the article by Levine et al 2 on bergapten-induced tanning, that it is not possible to obtain a safe tan by whatever means (viz, no sunscreens, UVB sunscreens with or without tanning enhancers or by exposure to UVA radiation).

A rapid and cleaner chrome tanning technology based on ultrasound and microwave
Journal of Cleaner Production, 2020At present, chrome tanning had irreplaceable advantages and was still the dominant tanning method in leather making, thus more and more attention should be paid to minimizing chrome-containing effluent discharging during tanning with some new techniques.

Conclusion No. 4 of the American Academy of Dermatology Consensus Conference on Photoaging and Photodamage in 1988 was: "There is no safe way to tan." The article by Levine et al 1 on "The Effects of Bergapten and Sunlight on Cutaneous Pigmentation" in this issue of theArchivessuggests that this conclusion is incorrect and that a tan may be healthy ...

Cutaneous pigment responses to ultraviolet radiation are outlined in this article. The responses induced by different wavebands are compared, and the protection against further exposure that is conferred by different types of tanning is discussed. The term "tanning" is used here to denote the spectrum of adaptive changes in the skin resulting from ...

Impact of post-tanning chemicals on the pollution load of tannery wastewater.
Journal of Environmental Management, 2020The leather industry uses a large amount of chemicals to transform a raw hide into finished leather. Chemicals are not fully taken up by leather and thus end up in tannery wastewater.
