Tapered silicon optical fibers [PDF]

open access: yesOptics Express, 2010
The tapering of silicon optical fibers is demonstrated using a fusion splicer. The silicon fibers are fabricated using a high pressure chemical deposition technique to deposit an amorphous silicon core inside a silica capillary and the tapering is performed in a separate post-process.

Observation of the acceleration of light in a tapered optical fiber

open access: yesOptics Express, 2021
One of the most fascinating aspects of quantum fields in curved spacetime is the Unruh effect. The direct experimental detection of Unruh temperature has remained an elusive challenge up to now. Gradient optical waveguides manipulating the dispersion of photons are assumed to realize the great acceleration of effective particles, leading to a high ...

Monitoring techniques for the manufacture of tapered optical fibers [PDF]

open access: yesApplied Optics, 2015
The use of a range of optical techniques to monitor the process of fabricating optical fiber tapers is investigated. Thermal imaging was used to optimize the alignment of the optical system; the transmission spectrum of the fiber was monitored to confirm that the tapers had the required optical properties and the strain induced in the fiber during ...

Optical transmittance degradation in tapered fibers

open access: yesOptics Express, 2011
We investigated the cause of optical transmittance degradation in tapered fibers. Degradation commences immediately after fabrication and it eventually reduces the transmittance to almost zero. It is a major problem that limits applications of tapered fibers. We systematically investigated the effect of the dust-particle density and the humidity on the

A fiber-diffraction interferometer using a coherent fiber optic taper [PDF]

open access: yesMeasurement Science and Technology, 2010
We present a fiber-diffraction interferometer using a coherent fiber optic taper for optical testing in an uncontrolled environment. We use a coherent fiber optic taper and a single-mode fiber having thermally-expanded core. Part of the measurement wave coming from a test target is condensed through a fiber optic taper and spatially filtered from a ...

Chemical tapering of polymer optical fiber [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2017

Temperature Sensor Based on Periodically Tapered Optical Fibers [PDF]

open access: yesSensors, 2021
In this paper, the fabrication and characterization of a temperature sensor based on periodically tapered optical fibers (PTOF) are presented. The relation between the geometry of the sensors and sensing ability was investigated in order to find the relatively simple structure of a sensor.

Fiber taper characterization by optical backscattering reflectometry

open access: yesOptics Express, 2017
Fiber tapers provide a way to rapidly measure the spectra of many types of optical microcavities. Proper fabrication of the taper ensures that its width varies sufficiently slowly (adiabatically) along the length of the taper so as to maintain single spatial mode propagation.

Stepwise fabrication of arbitrary fiber optic tapers

open access: yesOptics Express, 2012
This work reports a modified flame-brush technique to fabricate fiber tapers with arbitrary waist profiles. The flame-brush approach is used to produce small step reductions in the fiber diameter, or step-tapers, with a constant speed flame brush sweep, while the fiber is uniformly stretched.
