Evanescent Wave Optical Trapping Using Tapered Optical Fibers
Optics in the Life Sciences, 2011We investigate experimentally and theoretically the trapping of micro- and nanoparticles in the evanescent field surrounding a tapered optical fiber. and show how combinations of modes may be used to control trapped particle dynamics.

Wavelength-dependent transmission of monomode optical fiber tapers
Applied Optics, 1985The transmission of light as a function of wavelength through biconical tapers formed in sections of monomode and low-mode number optical fibers is considered. It is found that in the monomode propagation regime the transmission varies sinusoidally with wavelength with a 50% peak loss and a 50-nm period, for tapers typical of those ...

Theory of fused-tapered nonlinear optical fiber couplers
Applied Optics, 1993We describe the principles underlying the operation of a nonlinear fused-tapered coupler. By analyzing a simplified model, we show that such a coupler may lead to new devices for switching and modulating optical power.

Power transfer between nonparallel and tapered optical fibers
Journal of the Optical Society of America, 1974Coupled-mode theory is used to find the power transfer between neighboring fibers when the coupling is dependent on the position along the fibers, as in nonparallel or tapered fibers. If the coupling coefficient is replaced by an averaged coupling coefficient, the usual coupled-mode solutions are found to apply.

Tapered optical-fiber-based pressure sensor
Optical Engineering, 2000An optical fiber pressure sensor has been developed using a biconically tapered single-mode optical fiber. The sensor has a pressure range of 1265 mbar and a sensitivity of 0.008 dB/mbar. The main attributes of the presented intensity sensor are its ease of fabrication, good repeatability, and very low cost. That makes it very suitable for applications
