Forward Brillouin scattering in tapered optical fibers

2008 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics, 2008
We experimentally study forward Brillouin scattering in tapered fibers. Circularly symmetric acoustic phonons resonant in fibers are observed by using a novel photoacoustic measurement technique. Strong acousto-optic interaction can take place in highly tapered fibers.

Correcting image distortion with fiber-optic tapers

Applied Optics, 1988
We examine an ultraviolet camera used aboard a rotating spacecraft where the image motion due to spacecraft spin is canceled by synchronously stepping the image charge accumulating in a charge coupled detector. Critical to this procedure is the flattening of a velocity field associated with the spherical focal surface of the Burch configuration camera.

Tapered optical-fiber temperature sensor

Microwave and Optical Technology Letters, 1996
Optical power transmission changes of 10–20 dB have been experimentally demonstrated by varying the temperature of a tapered monomode optical fiber that is fixed to a glass plate by two drops of adhesive. The effect arises from different expansion coefficients of the glass substrate and the silica fiber. This induces microbendings in the tapered region.

Ray trajectories in optical fiber tapered sections

Applied Optics, 1978
Slab waveguide tapers with finite cladding thickness are analyzed using a geometrical optics approach, and the results are compared with an exact modal analysis. Iteration formulas are derived for the calculation of the propagation angles of the guided modes and the corresponding changes in the core and cladding thicknesses, assuming that the ...

Formation and measurement of tapers in optical fibers

Review of Scientific Instruments, 1993
A simple fabrication method is described which is capable of producing physically repeatable biconical tapers in optical fibers. A resistively heated platinum wire furnace provides the heat with standard fiber-optic positioning equipment to secure the fiber.

Tapered fiber tips for fiber optic biosensors

Optical Engineering, 1995
Tapered fiber tips with different geometries are fabricated for developing a fiber optic biosensor. Fluorescence experiments are performed to compare the coupling efficiency of light for different fiber tip configurations. When light is generated in a "thick" layer (> 1 μm) around a fiber core, the continuously tapered tip with the steepest taper ...

Properties and applications of tapered optical fibers

SPIE Proceedings, 2001
Unlike conventional optical fibers in cylindrical form, a tapered optical fiber is a fiber with its core diameter linearly varied lengthwise. As a new type optical fiber, it can provide a higher coupling efficiency, converge the energy of output light and improve the stability and flexibility of the system, thus widely usable in the fields of high ...

An Optical Microphone Based on a Tapered Fiber

Bulletin of the Russian Academy of Sciences: Physics, 2020
A study is performed of the technological processes for manufacturing fibers with short tapered regions for the new generation of optical microphones using the electrical discharge technique. The experimental use of a technique for manufacturing nanofibers with given parameters on a facility with specialized capabilities is described.

Label-free tapered optical fiber plasmonic biosensor

Analytica Chimica Acta, 2021
We designed and fabricated a novel label-free ultrasensitive tapered optical fiber (TOF) plasmonic biosensor that successfully detected a five panel of microRNAs with good selectivity. The biosensing platform integrates three different metallic nanoparticles: gold spherical nanoparticles (AuNPs), gold nanorods (AuNRs), and gold triangular nanoprisms ...

Method of producing tapered optical fiber

Journal of Optical Technology, 2017
A novel method for fabricating a subwavelength-diameter optical fiber that can be coupled with optical microresonators is proposed. This method is characterized by the ability to produce a fiber with the specified characteristics required for reliable coupling owing to the possibility of correction of the fiber pulling parameters during fiber ...
