Using entropy-based local weighting to improve similarity assessment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
This paper enhances and analyses the power of local weighted similarity measures. The paper proposes a new entropy-based local weighting algorithm to be used in similarity assessment to improve the performance of the CBR retrieval task.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Family support in the control of hypertension Contribución familiar en el control de la hipertensión arterial Contribuição familiar no controle da hipertensão arterial

open access: yesRevista Latino-Americana de Enfermagem, 2008
Hypertension is related to the incidence of cardiovascular diseases. Family support is essential for the patient to control the disease. This study aimed to analyze whether the family positively contributes to the patient's control of the disease.

Applying psychological science to the CCTV review process: a review of cognitive and ergonomic literature [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
As CCTV cameras are used more and more often to increase security in communities, police are spending a larger proportion of their resources, including time, in processing CCTV images when investigating crimes that have occurred (Levesley & Martin ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Study of helicopterroll control effectiveness criteria [PDF]

open access: yes
A study of helicopter roll control effectiveness based on closed-loop task performance measurement and modeling is presented. Roll control critieria are based on task margin, the excess of vehicle task performance capability over the pilot's task ...

An efficient closed frequent itemset miner for the MOA stream mining system [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Mining itemsets is a central task in data mining, both in the batch and the streaming paradigms. While robust, efficient, and well-tested implementations exist for batch mining, hardly any publicly available equivalent exists for the streaming scenario ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Learning curve assessment of rule use provides evidence for spared implicit sequence learning in a mouse model of mental retardation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Humans with Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) have a mental retardation of which a notable characteristic is a weakness in recalling sequences of information. A mouse model of the disorder exists which exhibits behavioral and neurologic changes, but cognitive ...
