The Taxon as an Ontological Problem [PDF]
Although the term taxon is one of the most common concepts in biology, a range of its meanings cannot be comprehended by an universal definition. Usually, biologists construe their knowledge of “the same” taxon by substantially different interpretations, so they find themselves in need either to justify this “multiplication of taxon essences”, or to ...

A new taxon in the genus Neisseria
Annales de l'Institut Pasteur / Microbiologie, 1983Among 3,520 strains of Neisseria and Branhamella received in the laboratory during the last seven years, 13 could not be speciated. These 13 strains (Neisseria sp. group) were isolated from the throats of healthy children in Europe and Africa. The Neisseria sp. group oxidized glucose and maltose similarly to N. meningitidis.

The central and most dramatic symptom of this taxonic grouping of behaviors is that the victim breaks out of his world of normal social routines and expectations with a sudden flight into a dissociated world. Sometimes it is a literal running off, sometimes simply a mental withdrawal (as in Foulks’s cases). But regardless of which type is chosen, there

DIMENSIONAL ANALYSES OF TAXONIC DATA
Psychological Reports, 2007Principal component analysis (PCA) and common factor analysis are often used to model latent data structures. Typically, such analyses assume a single population whose correlation or covariance matrix is modelled. However, data may sometimes be unwittingly sampled from mixed populations containing a taxon (nonarbitrary subpopulation) and its ...

In this chapter, we consider some of the problems that may be encountered for specific taxa. We make no attempt to be comprehensive; rather, we have selected a few taxa to illustrate the types of issue that arise in some circumstances. The absence of a taxon from this chapter does not indicate that distance sampling methods are inappropriate for that ...

The generalized picture of windigo is that of a person who becomes obsessed with the compulsion to kill other people and eat human flesh, often under the belief of being possessed by a mythical monster. Such anthropophagy may or may not occur, but out of fear that it might, the victim is sometimes killed by members of the group.

Fright is the fundamental experience that binds together the papers and cases reported in this taxon, but beyond saying that, the specifics vary. In some instances, fright may be followed by a variety of symptoms, both physical and psychological, in the person who initially experienced the stimulus. In other instances, however, the relationship between
