Application of a deep learning image classifier for identification of Amazonian fishes

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 13, Issue 5, May 2023., 2023
To address the growing prevalence of large ecological datasets combined with a need for rapid species identification tools, we describe a novel application of a computer vision model, which is built to rapidly identify Amazonian fishes from captured image data.

Challenges and a call to action for protecting European red wood ants

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 36, Issue 6, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Red wood ants (RWAs) are a group of keystone species widespread in temperate and boreal forests of the Northern Hemisphere. Despite this, there is increasing evidence of local declines and extinctions. We reviewed the current protection status of RWAs throughout Europe and their International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) threat ...

Microbiota analysis for risk assessment of xenobiotics: toxicomicrobiomics, incorporating the gut microbiome in the risk assessment of xenobiotics and identifying beneficial components for One Health

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 20, Issue S2, December 2022., 2022
Abstract This work explores three areas of relevance to the gut microbiome in the context of One Health; the incorporation of the microbiome in food safety risk assessment of xenobiotics; the identification and application of beneficial microbial components to various areas under One Health, and specifically, in the context of antimicrobial resistance.

Microbiota analysis for risk assessment of xenobiotics: cumulative xenobiotic exposure and impact on human gut microbiota under One Health approach

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 20, Issue S2, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Human gut microbiota is the microbial community that, through the constant bidirectional communication with its host, plays the critical role of maintaining the state of eubiosis and health balance, contributing to food digestion, detoxification, and proper endocrine, neurological, immunological and potentially reproductive health.

Soil macroinvertebrate communities: A world‐wide assessment

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Biogeography, Volume 31, Issue 7, Page 1261-1276, July 2022., 2022
Abstract Aim Macroinvertebrates comprise a highly diverse set of taxa with great potential as indicators of soil quality. Communities were sampled at 3,694 sites distributed world‐wide. We aimed to analyse the patterns of abundance, composition and network characteristics and their relationships to latitude, mean annual temperature and rainfall, land ...

Potential Invasive Indo‐Pacific Acropora in a Coral Reef of Venezuela: A Contribution to Their Morphological and Molecular Knowledge [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
We report the first record of a non‐native hermatypic coral in Venezuela, exhibiting biological traits characteristic of invasive species. The coral is a member of the genus Acropora (Scleractinia: Acroporidae), native to the Indo‐Pacific. This non‐native petrous coral occurred in a reef of the Morrocoy National Park, in the southern Caribbean.
