Rotation of the c-Ring Promotes the Curvature Sorting of Monomeric ATP Synthases. [PDF]
An active curvature sorting of monomeric ATP synthases into lipid nanotubes is measured under rotating conditions. As suggested by coarse‐grained simulations, the rotational movement of proteins produces a hydrophobic mismatch at the protein–lipid interface leading to a membrane‐mediated attractive interaction among proteins.

Canalized to heat, plastic to cold: adaptive coordination of leaf and seed strategies in populations spanning an elevational gradient. [PDF]
Summary In tropical mountains, surviving temperature extremes demands finely tuned strategies. We investigated how populations of the bromeliad Pitcairnia flammea across a 2200 m elevational gradient balance genetic canalization and plasticity, and whether thermal strategies are coordinated between seeds and leaves.

We studied how temperate and neotropical butterflies respond to temperature change. Neotropical butterflies were better at regulating their body temperature than temperate butterflies, mainly because at high air temperatures neotropical butterflies cooled themselves more.

Abstract Global warming is predicted to increase both average temperatures and the frequency and duration of heat waves. Tropical ectotherms, particularly those living in warm environments are more prone to receive heat impacts. Then, it is crucial to identify those populations already exposed to high temperatures that may be at risk of decimation by ...

Warming of aquatic ecosystems disrupts aquatic–terrestrial linkages in the tropics
Using tank‐bromeliads, the authors experimentally investigated for the first time how aquatic–terrestrial linkages are affected by warming in the tropics. In contrast to temperate regions, warming is predicted to cause strong declines in tropical aquatic insect emergence into terrestrial ecosystems, while variably affecting terrestrial detritus ...

Hydrodynamic Analysis of the Flow inside the Submerged Entry Nozzle
The quality of steel produced by continuous casting depends mainly on the characteristics of the liquid steel flow pattern within the mold. This pattern depends on the flow dynamics of the nozzle that is immersed in liquid steel. This work characterizes the fluid dynamics within two separate submerged entry nozzle models with a square cross section ...

Very small cellular compartments can break electroneutrality and harness proton gradients without active transport structures, whereas larger volumes cannot, underscoring why life's critical energy processes are confined in microscopic spaces. ABSTRACT The effect of pH changes in external ionic solutions on liposomes entrapping non‐permeable weak acid ...
