TEHL simulation on the influence of lubricants on load-dependent gear losses

Abstract A transient TEHL simulation model based on a finite element formulation and implemented in multiphysics software is applied to study the TEHL contact along the path of contact of spur gears with a focus on load-dependent gear loss of different lubricants. Lubricant properties including the limiting shear stress are based on measurement data.

Formation of Steady Dimples in Point TEHL Contacts

Experimental results of steady dimples measured in elliptical glass-steel contact under pure sliding conditions are presented. It is found that two dimples connected with a shallower furrow are generated, each near an end of the major radius of the contact ellipse. Characterization of TEHL contacts of thermoplastic gears

Thermoplastic materials generally show low specific weight, low coefficients of friction, noise damping behavior and demonstrate low-cost manufacturing by injection molding. This qualifies thermoplastics for the use in lightweight gear design and more generally for an increase in resource efficiency.

Approximation Solution for TEHL of Bevel Gears in PSD

To study the lubrication of the contact zone between half-shaft gears and planet gears in the power-split device (PSD), TEHL line contact of bevel gears in PSD is approximately computed based on a theory in which a bevel gear is equalized to an equivalent spur gear.

Thermo-mechanical response of TEHL contacts under dynamic loading conditions

A CFD-FSI approach is employed to investigate the thermo-mechanical response of TEHL contacts to time- varying loading conditions. The response to an impact load, with increment Delta f over time Delta t, and taking into account the equivalent system mass m, on film thickness, pressure and temperature variations, is being investigated.
