Peroneal tendon disorders

open access: yesEFORT Open Reviews, 2017
Pathological abnormality of the peroneal tendons is an under-appreciated source of lateral hindfoot pain and dysfunction that can be difficult to distinguish from lateral ankle ligament injuries.

Impact of Fiber Orientation in Electrospun PLA Scaffolds on Fluid Dynamics in a Custom Microfluidic Device

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Fiber orientation in electrospun scaffolds affects permeability and fluid dynamics in microfluidic devices. Combining experimental data with computational fluid dynamic simulations, we show that aligned fibers enhance flow uniformity, reduce pressure and shear stress variability.

Pain and Function in the Runner a Ten (din) uous Link

open access: yesMedicina, 2020
A male runner (30 years old; 10-km time: 33 min, 46 s) had been running with suspected insertional Achilles tendinopathy (AT) for ~2 years when the pain reached a threshold that prevented running.

Microphysiological Systems for Comorbidity Studies: Chronic Kidney Disease and Osteoarthritis

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This review highlights the potential of organ‐on‐a‐chip systems for studying comorbidities, using chronic kidney disease (CKD) and osteoarthritis (OA) as examples. It summarizes recent advances in kidney‐on‐a‐chip and joint‐on‐a‐chip models and discusses their current and potential application in investigating CKD, OA, and CKD‐OA comorbidity, aiming to

Evidence Supporting Intralesional Stem Cell Therapy to Improve Equine Flexor Tendon Healing

open access: yesVeterinary Evidence, 2017
Clinical bottom lineCurrent experimental evidence suggests that intralesional stem cell administration improves the histological characteristics and matrix organisation of healing equine superficial digital flexor tendons (SDFT); however, the clinical ...

Conditioned Media from Mechanically Stimulated Macrophages Upregulate Osteogenic Genes in Human Mesenchymal Stromal Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Bone fracture healing is a complex, timely orchestrated scenario involving multiple cell types and a plethora of cytokines and regulatory factors. To gain further insight, an in vitro model to a) study macrophage polarization under mechanical load in a fibrin hydrogel and b) subsequently assess the effect of conditioned media derived from macrophages ...

Effect of snake venom derived fibrin glue on the tendon healing in dogs: clinical and biomechanical study

open access: yesJournal of Venomous Animals and Toxins including Tropical Diseases, 2005
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of snake venom derived fibrin glue on the strength oftendon healing in dogs. The deep digital flexor tendon of the 5th digit of 24 thoracic limbs was partially sectioned for adhesive application.

Therapeutic Implants: Mechanobiologic Enhancement of Osteogenic, Angiogenic, and Myogenic Responses in Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells on 3D‐Printed Titanium Truss

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates a synergistic effect between 3D‐printed surface features and mechanical micro‐strain in enhancing the osteogenic, angiogenic, and myogenic responses of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). Load‐induced mechanotransduction, facilitated by the implant's architectural design, significantly amplifies hMSC differentiation.

A Clinical, Biological, and Biomaterials Perspective into Tendon Injuries and Regeneration

open access: yesTissue engineering. Part B, Reviews, 2016
Tendon injury is common and debilitating, and it is associated with long-term pain and ineffective healing. It is estimated to afflict 25% of the adult population and is often a career-ending disease in athletes and racehorses.

Engineering Extracellular Microenvironments: The Impact of Fibrous Materials on Cell Behavior

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Fibrous structures are key elements of the native extracellular matrix and crucial for directing cell behavior. This review discusses how fiber properties such as composition, diameter, and alignment affect cell responses in 2D and 3D systems. Strategies for integrating fibrous cues into engineered tissues are highlighted, and future directions for ...
