Screening for mycotoxins with larvae of Tenebrio molitor

Journal of Invertebrate Pathology, 1975
Abstract Larvae of the yellow mealworm, Tenebrio molitor, were used to screen isolates of field and storage fungi, included in their dietary substrate, for mycotoxins. Feeding of three isolates of Fusarium roseum, two of Fusarium equiseti and of Fusarium nivale, and one of an unidentified species of Fusarium resulted in growth depression of the ...

Translational control in the mealworm, Tenebrio molitor

Nature, 1975
ONE of the best known examples of translational control in a eukaryotic system comes from studies on the mealworm, Tenebrio molitor, in which control of the synthesis of adult cuticular proteins at the translational level has been proposed1–7. From experiments using actinomycin D, it was concluded that the mRNAs for some of the adult cuticular proteins

Insulin-like molecules in the beetle Tenebrio molitor

Cell and Tissue Research, 1993
Immunocytochemical staining of the nervous system of larva, pupa, and adult stage of Tenebrio molitor with anti-insulin serum demonstrated insulin-like peptides in the protocerebrum, corpora allata, and suboesophageal ganglion. During pupal development, marked changes in staining intensity of the protocerebral cells were detected.

A digestive prolyl carboxypeptidase in Tenebrio molitor larvae

Insect Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 2013
Prolyl carboxypeptidase (PRCP) is a lysosomal proline specific serine peptidase that also plays a vital role in the regulation of physiological processes in mammals. In this report, we isolate and characterize the first PRCP in an insect. PRCP was purified from the anterior midgut of larvae of a stored product pest, Tenebrio molitor, using a three-step

Intestinal Canthariasis Due to Tenebrio molitor

The Journal of Parasitology, 1946
Canthariasis (Osler's "scoleciasis"), or accidental parasitism by coleopteran (beetle) larvae in man, is a rather rare and poorly known entity. The disease is to be distinguished from myiasis and scholeciasis, infection by dipteran (fly) and lepidopteran (moth) larvae, respectively.

Extraction and physicochemical characterization of Tenebrio molitor proteins

Food Research International, 2016
This study focused on the extraction and physicochemical characterization of proteins from larvae and larvae meal of Tenebrio molitor. The larvae were subjected to a protein extraction process which involved a thermo-mechanical pre-treatment to produce the larvae meal.

THE NUTRITIVE REQUIREMENTS OF TENEBRIO MOLITOR LARVAE

The Biological Bulletin, 1942
1. A standard experimental method is presented which can be used to investigate factors that modify the nutritive responses of molitor larvae.2. Larvae failed to grow when fed a vitamin-free diet of casein, fat, carbohydrate, salt mixture and cholesterol but, when this diet was supplemented with yeast or liver, optimum growth occurred.3. When the above

Hormone-pheromone relationships in the beetle, Tenebrio molitor

Journal of Insect Physiology, 1970
A study was undertaken to determine the role, if any, of the neuroendocrine system in the production of a sex pheromone by adult females of Tenebrio molitor. The corpora allata, brain, the entire head, the frontal ganglion, or the ovaries were removed from newly emerged females.

Tenebrio molitor hydrolysates

Proteins derived from insects, especially Tenebrio molitor, offer a promising sustainable source of bioactive compounds. This research aimed to access the biological activities of protein hydrolysates extracted from T. molitor flour, with particular emphasis on their impact on lipid metabolism and oxidative stress in adipocyte models.
