Achieving large uniform tensile elasticity in microfabricated diamond

Science, 2021
Stretching diamond to the limit Diamond is thought of as being unbendable, but thin samples can actually deform elastically. Applying relatively large amounts of strain to diamond may shift its electronic properties, which is of interest for a number of ...

Tensile yield in bone [PDF]

open access: possibleCalcified Tissue Research, 1974
A simple method is described for visualising regions of bone that have yielded in tension. The appearance of such regions is quite different from that of regions that have yielded in compression. The significance of these findings is discussed.

Strength and breaking mechanism of multiwalled carbon nanotubes under tensile load

Science, 2000
The tensile strengths of individual multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were measured with a "nanostressing stage" located within a scanning electron microscope.

Internal deformation due to shear and tensile faults in a half-space

Bulletin of The Seismological Society of America (BSSA), 1992
A complete set of closed analytical expressions is presented in a unified manner for the internal displacements and strains due to shear and tensile faults in a half-space for both point and finite rectangular sources.

The tensile test

Acta Metallurgica et Materialia, 1990
Abstract Some features of the uniform strain and of the reduction of area in the tensile test are considered. With examples from b.c.c., f.c.c. and c.p.h. metals, it is shown how the uniform strain reflects the details of their plastic deformation characteristics.

The Tensile Strength of Elastomers

Rubber Chemistry and Technology, 1955
Abstract The theory of strength proposed above appears to describe satisfactorily the effect of crosslinking on the strength of amorphous elastomers, and to apply semiquantitatively to crystallizable elastomers. Further work, involving the effect of primary molecular weight, constitution, swelling, and additives is required to substantiate the ...

Tensile loading of ropes of single wall carbon nanotubes and their mechanical properties

Physical Review Letters, 2000
The mechanical response of 15 single wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) ropes under tensile load was measured. For 8 of these ropes strain data were obtained and they broke at strain values of 5.3% or lower.

Development of the Z Specimen for Tensile-Tensile, Tensile-Compression, Compression-Compression Wire Testing

Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance, 2011
A new wire test specimen was developed as part of the Safe Technology consortium project to produce a nitinol algorithm for the fe-safe™ fatigue postprocessor. The requirements for the design were permit tensile and compressive loading, accommodate data collection of strains from ±0.1 to 6% at high-frequency cycling.

Mechanical Instability and Tensile Properties of TiZrHfNbTa High Entropy Alloy at Cryogenic Temperatures

Acta Materialia, 2020
The equiatomic TiZrHfNbTa alloy is one of the few refractory high entropy alloys that exhibit tensile ductility at room temperature, the deformation of which is only dominated by dislocation slip.

Tensile Response of a Flexible Pipe With an Incomplete Tensile Armor Layer

Journal of Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering, 2021
Abstract Unbonded flexible pipes are widely utilized in the exploitation of offshore oil and gas resources. They are connected to two of the most critical types of system: floating production platforms and underwater production systems. However, if some tensile armor wires are substituted by cables or broken, the tensile armor layer will
