Tension Band Wiring in Upper Extremity Surgery

Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, 2020
Tension band wiring is a simple, inexpensive, and effective technique to treat many upper extremity fractures. When tension forces result in a mechanical failure of bone, tension band wiring provides stability and promotes early mobilization by converting tensile forces across a fracture into compressive forces.

Failure of tension band plating: a case series

Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics B, 2017
Growth modulation with tension band plates (TBP) has been shown to be a very useful method for the treatment of angular deformities in growing children. Recently, we have observed cases of failure where the epiphyseal screw was drawn through the physis into the metaphysis.

Self-locking tension band technique. A new perspective in tension band wiring.

Archives of orthopaedic and trauma surgery, 2000
After experiencing some complications with the AO modified tension band technique, we have made a small modification to prevent proximal migration of the Kirschner wires. In this modification, the proximal ends of the wires are bent to form a loop and the cerclage wire passed through them. In this way, Kirschner wires and cerclage wire lock each other,

Tension Band Fixation of Medial Malleolus Fractures

Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma, 1991
A prospective study on tension band fixation of medial malleolus fractures was performed on 30 consecutive patients with 31 fractures from October 1987 until December 1990. All patients had at least a displaced medial malleolus fracture unreduced by closed methods. The fractures were classified into small, medium and large using a modified Lauge-Hansen

Patellar tension band wiring: a revised technique

Archives of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery, 2001
Using a modified AO tension band wiring technique to treat a patellar fracture has become popular and has achieved a high success rate. However, the technique of Kirschner wire insertion has not been considered in detail, which may migrate and consequently introduce fragments loss of reduction.

Olecranon tension plating or olecranon tension band wiring? A comparative biomechanical study

International Orthopaedics, 2015
The complication rate of a tension band wiring (TBW) used for the internal fixation of olecranon fractures remains high. The aim of this study was to compare the stability of a novel olecranon tension plate (OTP) with TBW in a simulated fracture model. We tested 12 fresh frozen-pairs of cadaver proximal ulnae treated with OTP and TBW under cyclic ...

Olecranon Osteotomy With Tension Band Wire Repair

Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma, 2016
Purpose: The purpose of this video is to demonstrate the surgical technique of olecranon osteotomy with tension band wire repair. Methods: A patient with a comminuted, intra-articular distal humerus fracture requiring ORIF is presented in this video demonstration of the surgical ...

Tension Band Wiring of Olecranon Fractures

Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1992
One of the weaknesses of the tension band wiring technique for the treatment of olecranon fractures is that it may open up the fracture at the articular surface of the ulna. A simple modification of the technique eliminates this problem by converting the distracting forces at the articular surface of the joint to compressive forces.

Tension Band Wiring of Olecranon Fractures

Shoulder & Elbow, 2009
Background Tension band wiring of olecranon fractures has been shown to be associated with a high rate of metalwork removal. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether this remained true or whether there had been a reduction in metalwork removal following improvements in surgical technique.

Treatment of Phalangeal Fractures by Tension Band Wiring

Journal of Hand Surgery, 2001
This retrospective study assessed the outcomes of 30 patients with phalangeal fractures which were treated by open reduction and tension band wiring. Oblique, transverse and comminuted extraarticular fractures, as well as intraarticular fractures, were treated with this technique and they all united in about 8 weeks.
