Evolving fracture patterns: columnar joints, mud cracks, and polygonal terrain [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
When cracks form in a thin contracting layer, they sequentially break the layer into smaller and smaller pieces. A rectilinear crack pattern encodes information about the order of crack formation, as later cracks tend to intersect with earlier cracks at ...

In Situ Micromechanical Study of Bimodal γ′–γ″ Precipitate Assemblies in Ni–Cr–Al–Nb Superalloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A Ni–Cr–Al–Nb superalloy with a bimodal γ′–γ″ precipitate distribution is developed. Composite precipitate assemblies form through heterogeneous nucleation, effectively impeding dislocation motion. Micropillar compression reveals high strength at room and elevated temperatures, governed by precipitate shearing, with coupled faulting mechanisms ...

Development of a flexible composite based on vulcanized silicon casting with bismuth oxide and characterization of its radiation shielding effectiveness in diagnostic X-ray energy range and medium gamma-ray energies

open access: yesNuclear Engineering and Technology
The study aims to develop a novel, lead-free, flexible and lightweight composite shielding material against ionizing radiation. For this, it was used bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) in RTV-2 silicon matrix. The shielding tests were carried out in both diagnostic X-

Investigating the tension between cloud-related actors and individual privacy rights [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Historically, little more than lip service has been paid to the rights of individuals to act to preserve their own privacy. Personal information is frequently exploited for commercial gain, often without the person’s knowledge or permission.

Evidence for the formation of magnetic moments in the cuprate superconductor Hg$_{0.8}$Cu$_{0.2}$Ba$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{8+\delta}$ below $T_c$ seen by NQR

open access: yes, 2003
We report pure zero field nuclear magnetic resonance (NQR) measurements on the optimally doped three layer high-$ T_{c} $-compounds HgBaCaCuO and HgBaCaCuO(F) with $T_c$ 134 K.

Biodegradable and Recyclable Luminescent Mixed‐Matrix‐Membranes, Hydrogels, and Cryogels based on Nanoscale Metal‐Organic Frameworks and Biopolymers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The study presents biodegradable and recyclable mixed‐matrix membranes (MMMs), hydrogels, and cryogels using luminescent nanoscale metal‐organic frameworks (nMOFs) and biopolymers. These bio‐nMOF‐MMMs combine europium‐based nMOFs as probes for the status of the materials with the biopolymers agar and gelatine and present alternatives to conventional ...

Indirect Band Edge and Chain‐Locked Linear Dichroism in the Quasi‐1D Van der Waals Antiferromagnet AgCrP2S6

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
AgCrP2S6 reveals a momentum‐indirect band edge (≈1.35 eV) and chain‐locked linear dichroism: the first direct transitions emerge at 1.6–1.8 eV for E||a. Resonant Raman and photoemission corroborate this assignment. In ACPS/graphene heterostructures, photocurrent turns on above ≈1.5 eV and follows the same polarization selection rules (anisotropy ≈0.53),
