Metamaterial based terahertz detector

2011 International Conference on Infrared, Millimeter, and Terahertz Waves, 2011
We present a metamaterial based terahertz (THz) detector. The detector design, which combines metamaterials and MEMs, is frequency selective, and we have fabricated and tested detectors at 95 GHz and 693 GHz with noise equivalent powers of 1.13 × 10−8 W/√Hz and 2.96 × 10−8 W/√Hz and responsivities of 16,500 V/W and 6,800 V/W, respectively. These values

Inexpensive detector for terahertz imaging

Applied Optics, 2007
Glow discharge plasma, derived from direct-current gas breakdown, is investigated in order to realize an inexpensive terahertz (THz) room-temperature detector. Preliminary results for THz radiation show that glow discharge indicator lamps as room-temperature detectors yield good responsivity and noise-equivalent power.

Terahertz sources and detectors

SPIE Proceedings, 2005
Through the support of the US Army Research Office we are developing terahertz sources and detectors suitable for use in the spectroscopy of chemical and biological materials as well as for use in imaging systems to detect concealed weapons. Our technology relies on nonlinear diodes to translate the functionality achieved at microwave frequencies to ...

Terahertz Sources and Detectors

2012
This chapter describes techniques and systems regarding terahertz sources and detectors, mainly reviewing basic concepts and principles to help understand THz imaging instruments. The terahertz technologies outlined in this chapter provide background knowledge to the experimental work on the identification and reconstruction of terahertz spectroscopic ...

Design guidelines for terahertz mixers and detectors

IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques, 2005
Twin-slot antennas and coplanar waveguides are a popular choice for coupling signals to state-of-the-art mixers and detectors at terahertz frequencies. Although these sensors show promising performance in terms of noise temperature, they usually also show a considerable downward shift in the center frequency of their spectral response, especially when ...

Solid State Rectifier as Terahertz Detector

2018 AEIT International Annual Conference, 2018
We present a new solid state rectifier, compatible with CMOS integrated circuit, suitable to direct conversion of terahertz radiation, at room temperature. The structure creates a rectenna, consists in a truncated conical helix extruded from a planar spiral and connected to a nanometric metallic whisker at one of its edges. The whisker reaches the gate

SILICON FINFETS AS DETECTORS OF TERAHERTZ AND SUB-TERAHERTZ RADIATION

International Journal of High Speed Electronics and Systems, 2011
We report on terahertz detection (from 0.2 THz to 2.4 THz) by Si FinFETs of different widths (with 2, 20, and 200 fins connected in parallel). FinFETs (with a small number of fins and with feature sizes as short as 20 nm to 40 nm) showed a very high responsivity (far above that previously measured for standard CMOS).

A review of terahertz detectors

Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 2019
Physics is the interplay of energy and matter. Energy, in the form of light, interacting with matter, principally in the solid state, underpins this topical review. The subject is developed carefully and methodically, beginning with basic definitions pertaining to terahertz detectors and terahertz radiation, then proceeding systematically to delineate ...

An HTS detector for terahertz imaging

SPIE Proceedings, 2008
ABSTRACT This paper describes the design, implementation and measurements of a detector for imaging purposes at terahertz frequencies. The detector comprises of a ring slot antenna coupled to a high temperature superconducting Josephson Junction device. The detector was shown to respond to an incident field at 0.6 THz. An imaging system was constructed

Superconducting detectors for terahertz imaging

2015 40th International Conference on Infrared, Millimeter, and Terahertz waves (IRMMW-THz), 2015
Superconducting niobium nitride (NbN) hot electron bolometer (HEB) detectors consist of a complementary logarithmic-spiral antenna made of gold and an NbN film (bridge) connecting across the antenna's inner terminals have been fabricated and characterized.
