Modeling oxygen transport in human placental terminal villi

Journal of Theoretical Biology, 2011
Oxygen transport from maternal blood to fetal blood is a primary function of the placenta. Quantifying the effectiveness of this exchange remains key in identifying healthy placentas because of the great variability in capillary number, caliber and position within the villus-even in placentas deemed clinically "normal".

Morphometric Characteristics of Terminal Villi of the Placenta in Pre-Eclampsia

Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine, 2012
Comparative morphological study of the placentas from women suffering from pre-eclampsia was carried out. Morphometric studies of histological preparations showed shrinkage and low vascularization of the placental terminal villi determining the development of hypoxia.

Morphological study of placental terminal villi in intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy: Histochemistry, light and electron microscopy

Placenta, 1980
Summary Histochemistry, light and electron microscopy were used to study the changes in the morphology of the terminal villi of four term placentae from anicteric ICP and two from icteric ICP as compared to three normal placentae. Alterations observed in ICP placentae were a reduction of the intervillous space, syncytial and cytotrophoblastic ...

Morphological Characteristics of the Terminal Villi in Placental Failure

Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine, 2013
A comparative morphological study of the placentas in spontaneous and induced pregnancy aggravated by placental failure was carried out. Placental failure manifested by shrinkage of the terminal villi, lesser number and section areas of their capillaries, and higher expression of vascular endothelium growth factor and endothelial NO synthase in the ...

Caspase Expression in Placental Terminal Villi in Spontaneous and Induced Pregnancy

Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine, 2014
Placental levels of caspase 1, 8, and 10 were studied by the immunohistochemical method in full-term spontaneous and induced pregnancies. The levels of these caspases in the placental terminal villi were significantly higher in induced pregnancy. The changes were more marked after intracytoplasmatic injection of spermatozoa.

Nerve Terminals Associated with the Central Lacteal Lymphatics in the Duodenal and lleal Villi of the Monkey

Cells Tissues Organs, 1993
An intimate association of nerve fibers with the central lacteal endothelium was demonstrated in the duodenum and ileum of the monkey by immunohistochemistry and transmission electron microscopy. In the basal portion of the central lacteal, nerve fibers containing large cored vesicles and small clear vesicles were located closely beneath the lacteal ...

Paternity testing after pregnancy termination using laser microdissection of chorionic villi

International Journal of Legal Medicine, 2002
We report an unusual case of paternity testing from residues of chorionic villi 5 weeks after pregnancy termination. The autopsy of a 32-year-old female homicide victim revealed the presence of intact chorionic villi at the former placenta implantation site.

Effects of High Altitude on the Vascularization of Terminal Villi in Human Placentae

1988
The oxygen diffusing capacity of the human hemomonochorial placenta is influenced by the physical dimensions of the tissue components of the materno-fetal interhemal barrier (Laga et al., 1973; Mayhew et al., 1984). Of these tissue components, the villous membrane — comprising trophoblast, villous stroma, and fetal capillary endothelium — makes a major

Changes in the proteome of placental terminal villi in severe pre-eclampsia

Voprosy ginekologii, akušerstva i perinatologii
Identifying the pathogenesis, timely diagnosis and adequate treatment of pre-eclampsia (PE) will reduce maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Objective. To analyze the hypothesis about the influence of placental terminal villus proteins on the development of PE. Patients and methods. After clinical examination and diagnosis, six patients were
