Survivor average causal effects for continuous time: a principal stratification approach to causal inference with semicompeting risks [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
In semicompeting risks problems, nonterminal time-to-event outcomes such as time to hospital readmission are subject to truncation by death. These settings are often modeled with illness-death models for the hazards of the terminal and nonterminal events, but evaluating causal treatment effects with hazard models is problematic due to conditioning on ...

Deep Ecology and End-of-Life Care

open access: yes, 2009
Physicians and nurses caring for terminally ill patients are expected to center their moral concerns almost exclusively on the needs and welfare of the dying patient and the patients family.

An analysis of physicians\u27 reluctance to follow terminally ill patients\u27 advance directives [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
This explanatory study examined the reasons why physicians have difficulty respecting the wishes of terminally ill patients who refuse treatment. Consistent with the relevant literature, three alternative explanations were hypothesized in answering the ...

Is Counseling Ready for Rational Suicide? A Study of Perceived Competence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Many counselors believe suicidal ideation in a terminally ill client can be rational (Rogers et al, 2001). One hundred and fifty-three counselors rated their perceived competence to counsel individuals who are rationally suicidal. Data were analyzed with

Ultrasoft Iontronics: Stretchable Diodes Enabled by Ionically Conductive Bottlebrush Elastomers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces a solvent‐free, ultrasoft, and stretchable ionic diode based on oppositely charged bottlebrush elastomers (BBEs). The BBE diode exhibits an ultralow Young's modulus (<23 kPa), a high rectification ratio of 46, and stretchability over 400%.

Radiation‐Resistant Bacteria Deinococcus radiodurans‐Derived Extracellular Vesicles as Potential Radioprotectors

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Deinococcus radiodurans‐derived extracellular vesicles (R1‐EVs) provide radioprotection against total‐body irradiation‐induced acute radiation syndrome in mice. R1‐EVs mitigate oxidative damage by scavenging free radicals, promoting intestinal repair, enhancing hematopoietic function, and modulating immune responses. This study highlights the potential

Randomized block coordinate descent method for linear ill-posed problems [PDF]

open access: yes
Consider the linear ill-posed problems of the form $\sum_{i=1}^{b} A_i x_i =y$, where, for each $i$, $A_i$ is a bounded linear operator between two Hilbert spaces $X_i$ and ${\mathcal Y}$. When $b$ is huge, solving the problem by an iterative method using the full gradient at each iteration step is both time-consuming and memory insufficient.

From the Warehouse to the Deathbed: Challenging the Conditions of Mass Death in Prison [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The purpose of this project is to analyze the crisis of mass incarceration by placing the conditions faced by elderly, terminally ill, and dying prisoners, as its main point of focus.

Dendrimer Conjugates with PD‐L1‐Binding Peptides Enhance In Vivo Antitumor Immune Response

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
In this paper, a novel nanoparticle scaffold composed of dendrimers conjugated with peptide‐based immune checkpoint inhibitors, enhancing drug delivery efficacy is introduced. By conjugating PD‐L1‐binding peptides to dendrimers, multivalent binding effects are harnessed, resulting in enhanced binding affinity, prolonged half‐life, and improved ...

Determinant factors of mortality in terminally ill patients with do-not-resuscitate orders

open access: yesFormosan Journal of Surgery, 2018
Background: This study aimed to profile the clinical pictures and identify the risk factors of mortality among terminally ill patients who visited the emergency department (ED) and had signed do-not-resuscitate (DNR) consents.
