Valorization of Garcinia humilis Residues in Active Collagen/Starch Films for Biodegradable Packaging Applications

open access: yesPackaging Technology and Science, EarlyView.
Residues from Garcinia humilis were used to obtain a phenolic‐rich extract (GHRE) and incorporated into collagen–starch films. The addition of GHRE improved antioxidant activity, thermal stability and elasticity, while reducing water vapour permeability.

Classification of Fog Life‐Cycle Phases Using Ground‐Based and Satellite‐Based Observations

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
In this study, the life‐cycle phases of radiation fog events—formation, maturity, and dissipation—are automatically classified at a ground station in Southwest Germany based on visibility trends and thresholds. We demonstrate that visibility detects radiation fog phases effectively, while its combination with ceilometer data can detect the life‐cycle ...

Assessing wildfire dynamics during a megafire in Portugal using the MesoNH/ForeFire coupled model

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Weather conditions affect megafires by inducing different fire behaviors over several days or weeks. The coupled MesoNH/ForeFire code was used to represent the dynamics of fire generating pyro‐convective clouds. To advance the understanding of wildfire dynamics, high‐resolution coupled fire–atmosphere modeling was employed.

Breaking down seagrass fragmentation in a marine heatwave impacted World Heritage Area

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Habitat fragmentation can exacerbate the impacts of habitat loss but is rarely quantified in marine environments. Using satellite‐derived habitat maps, we identify widespread seagrass fragmentation following a marine heatwave that contributed to a dramatic shift in seascape structure in the Shark Bay World Heritage Area.

UAVs unveil the role of small scale vegetation structure on wader nest survival

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
In this study, we combine high‐resolution vegetation structural metrics derived from unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery with on‐field wader nest survival monitoring. We show that the immediate vegetation height and heterogeneity within a 2‐meter buffer surrounding the clutch of the recorded ground‐nesting wader species positively influenced its ...

Comparing convolutional neural network and random forest for benthic habitat mapping in Apollo Marine Park

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
A comparison of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Random Forest (RF) model predictions of benthic habitats within Apollo Marine Park. The CNN (left) and RF (right) classification maps show the spatial distribution of three habitat types: high energy circalittoral rock with seabed‐covering sponges, low complexity circalittoral rock with non‐crowded

Hyperspectral species maps and LiDAR‐based structured population models show future forest fire frequency may compromise forest resilience

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Monitoring forest recovery from disturbances at scale requires tracking tree dynamics, yet traditional ground‐based approaches are resource‐intensive. We present a pipeline to parameterize integral projection models (IPMs) using LiDAR data and hyperspectral‐based species maps to assess post‐fire recovery across large, forested areas at the Caribou ...

Manobra orbital terra-lua-terra

open access: yes, 2014
In the present work an Earth-Moon-Earth orbital maneuver is studied with the purpose of minimum fuel consumption. Initially it is considered an artificial satellite orbiting around the Earth. In a certain instant an impulse is effected to effect a not cofocal maneuver where the satellite is transferred to an orbit of geocentric transference until a ...

Surface roughness measurements using UAV LiDAR and analysis of uncertainty factors

open access: yesRiver, EarlyView.
Abstract Surface root mean square height (SRMSH) is a key parameter characterizing surface roughness; it reflects soil hydrological properties and influences related physical processes. LiDAR offers an effective means for measuring SRMSH over large areas, yet the method involves several uncertainty factors that require further investigation.
