Modeling and Characterization of a Self‐Sensing Soft Hydraulic Muscle

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This article presents the self‐sensing soft hydraulic muscle (SSHM), a novel soft actuator capable of simultaneously sensing force and length without external sensors. A comprehensive model accurately predicts SSHM behavior, validated experimentally with minimal errors. Using propylene glycol enhances durability and reduces hysteresis.

Terrestrial Cyborg Insects for Real‐Life Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This article reviews the development of terrestrial cyborg insects from their emergence in 1997 to mid‐2025, examining three key aspects: locomotion control methods, associated challenges with proposed solutions, and practical applications. Framing these biohybrid systems as insect‐scale mobile robots, the review provides foundational insights for new ...

Effects of Freezing on Soil Temperature, Freezing Front Propagation and Moisture Redistribution in Peat: Laboratory Investigations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
There are not many studies that report water movement in freezing peat. Soil column studies under controlled laboratory settings can help isolate and understand the effects of different factors controlling freezing of the active layer in organic covered ...

Slip‐Adaptive Neural Control of Gecko‐Inspired Adhesive Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This study introduces a neural adhesion controller to improve the stability of gecko‐inspired climbing robots. By integrating an echo state network and a multilayer perceptron, the system utilizes joint torque feedback to accurately estimate adhesion in both normal and shear directions and predict slips. This enables effective recovery from slip events,

Maneuverable Multilegged Locomotion through Anisotropically Arranged Soft Backbones in a Single‐Actuator Modular Miniature Robot

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
A modular eight‐legged robot exploits anisotropically oriented soft I‐beam backbones to transmit vibration from a single unbalanced‐mass actuator, producing frequency‐dependent multimodal gaits. A pseudo‐rigid‐body model enables high‐fidelity MuJoCo simulation, while Bayesian parameter identification and reinforcement learning yield robust control ...

Topographic slope correction for analysis of thermal infrared images [PDF]

open access: yes
A simple topographic slope correction using a linearized thermal model and assuming slopes less than about 20 degrees is presented. The correction can be used to analyzed individual thermal images or composite products such as temperature difference or ...

Geomorphometric Analysis of Karst Terrains

open access: yes, 2017
The availability of high-resolution digital elevation models (DEM) has increased the possibilities of geomorphometric analysis of karst terrains. Apart from the classical terrain parameters (distribution of elevations, slopes, orientations, curvature, etc.), there have been developments of new algorithms that expand further the possibilities of ...

Worm‐Inspired Soft Robots With Modular Outfit‐Changing for Intelligent Multienvironment Adaptation

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This study proposes a worm‐inspired soft robot capable of locomotion across multiple environments through a modular “outfit‐changing” strategy. The robot integrates pneumatically actuated peristaltic segments with interchangeable external modules, enabling efficient motion on ground surfaces, within pipelines, through granular media, and underwater ...

Analysis of snow avalanche terrain

open access: yesCanadian Geotechnical Journal, 1977
A multiple regression analysis has been performed of the average annual number of avalanches and terrain factors. Observations were made at 36 paths at Rogers Pass over a period of 9 years. The average slope inclination measured from the starting point to the beginning of the run-out zone and exposure to wind proved to be the most significant ...
