Benthic macrofauna and habitat monitoring on the Continental Shelf of the northeastern United States: I. Biomass [PDF]

open access: yes, 1990
Information on long-term temporal variability of and trends in benthic community-structure variables, such as biomass, is needed to estimate the range of normal variability in comparison with the effects of environmental change or disturbance.

Modeling dependent gene expression

open access: yes, 2012
In this paper we propose a Bayesian approach for inference about dependence of high throughput gene expression. Our goals are to use prior knowledge about pathways to anchor inference about dependence among genes; to account for this dependence while ...

Predator perception of aposematic and cryptic color morphs in two Oophaga species

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 10, October 2024.
In this manuscript, we investigate color variances between aposematic and cryptic color morphs of two Oophaga species and under the visual system of three different predators. No significant variations was observed in color and luminance contrasts between species.

Impact of bidirectional relationships between streptococcus anginosus group and host tissue matrix components on cellular activity: Role in establishment of infection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
This paper investigates pathogenic mechanisms of the Streptococcus anginosus group (SAG) of bacteria which influence the biological activity of periodontal ligament (PDL) cells, endothelial cells and also how matrix proteins produced by these host cells ...

Maxillary morphology of chimpanzees: Captive versus wild environments

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, Volume 244, Issue 6, Page 977-994, June 2024.
Captive and wild chimpanzees were compared using three‐dimensional geometric morphometric methods to assess whether their maxillae are morphologically different. Overall, this study confirms that captive individuals are atypical specimens, unrepresentative of the wild morphology, and that they should not be included in craniometric analyses when the ...

A GIS‐based approach to site vegetated buffer strips for erosion control within an agricultural catchment in southern England

open access: yesHydrological Processes, Volume 38, Issue 5, May 2024.
We develop and test a scalable runoff risk GIS model in the lower Rother catchment, West Sussex, England. The model uses elevation data with the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) applied to satellite images as an erodibility proxy and identifies locations along pathways that are conceivably at greatest risk of sediment transfer. Current and

Variation in energy density of northwest Atlantic forage species: Ontogenetic, seasonal, annual, and spatial patterns

open access: yesMarine and Coastal Fisheries, Volume 16, Issue 2, April 2024.
Abstract Objective Energy density (ED) estimates for marine forage species have been limited, impeding our understanding of this important trophic level. We studied the EDs of eight key forage species: Alewife Alosa pseudoharengus, Atlantic Herring Clupea harengus, Silver Hake Merluccius bilinearis, Northern Sand Lance Ammodytes dubius, Atlantic ...
