Terrestrial isopods (Isopoda: Oniscidea) in the Upper Mežica valley

open access: yesNatura Sloveniae
The distribution of terrestrial isopods in many parts of Slovenia is still poorly documented. This article is a contribution to the knowledge of the terrestrial isopod fauna in the Upper Mežica Valley, which is known for its long mining tradition ...

Flooding affects fluctuating asymmetry but not growth of a riparian orbweaving spider

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
In a mesocosm experiment we assessed the impact of flood on aquatic insect emergence and on spider development using geometric morphometric analysis of fluctuating asymmetry. We observed 45% higher emergence in flooded mesocosm throughout the season. Spiders did not grow bigger but exhibited ~15% lower fluctuating asymmetry than in controls.

Habitat prevails over host sex in influencing mycobiome structure of terrestrial isopod, Armadillidium vulgare

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum
The terrestrial isopod, a crustacean order that has successfully transitioned from aquatic to land ecosystem, functions as a soil bioengineer and plays a crucial role in ecological decomposition.

Terrestrial isopods (Crustacea, Isopoda, Oniscidea) from Mesovoid Shallow Substratum habitats of Portugal [PDF]

open access: yesSubterranean Biology
The Mesovoid Shallow Substratum (MSS) is a largely unknown subterranean habitat formed by the accumulation of rock fragments in steep slopes. In this study, we investigated the diversity, abundance and seasonal dynamics of terrestrial isopods in MSS ...

A preliminary checklist of terrestrial isopods (Isopoda; Oniscidea) from Iran [PDF]

open access: yesIranian Journal of Animal Biosystematics, 2018
In the present study, a species list of identified terrestrial isopods in the fauna of Iran is provided based on the literature records. The list contains 45 species belonging to 25 genera and 11 families, of which two genera and 21 species are endemic ...

Beyond species diversity: Functional responses of cave arthropods to microclimatic stability and structural complexity

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
Species richness declined along cave microclimatic gradient, while diversity increased with habitat heterogeneity, highlighting distinct roles of abiotic conditions and structural complexity in shaping arthropod communities. Functional traits shifted along the microclimatic gradient, with larger‐bodied and more eye‐regressed arthropods dominating under

The terrestrial isopod microbiome: An all-in-one toolbox for animal-microbe interactions of ecological relevance

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2016
Bacterial symbionts represent essential drivers of arthropod ecology and evolution, influencing host traits such as nutrition, reproduction, immunity and speciation.

The Keystone‐Pathogen Hypothesis Updated: The Role of Porphyromonas gingivalis in Periodontitis

open access: yesJournal of Periodontal Research, EarlyView.
Porphyromonas gingivalis orchestrates a coordinated manipulation of immune and inflammatory responses in periodontal tissues which leads to the generation of a dysbiotic, subgingival biofilm community, and progression of periodontitis. The type 9 secretion system, lipid A modification, and the formation of outer membrane vesicles are important ...

A checklist of isopods (Crustacea: Isopoda) in Slovenia

open access: yesNatura Sloveniae, 2023
Isopods are a diverse peracarid crustacean group with marine, freshwater and terrestrial representatives. Isopod species lists were typically prepared according to different habitats, which was true also for Slovenia. Here, we prepared the first unified

A Cost of Reproduction in a Terrestrial Isopod [PDF]

open access: yesEvolution, 1983
Species that reproduce repeatedly over their lifetimes typically allocate energy to both their reproductive activities and their non-reproductive, somatic activities. Fisher (1930) first posed the evolutionary problem of understanding not merely the physiological mechanism of this energy allocation, but also the ultimate question of how the allocation ...
