Enteropathogenic E. coli shows delayed attachment and host response in human jejunum organoid‐derived monolayers compared to HeLa cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

Two new ripidiine species in Dominican amber with evidence of aggregative behaviour of males "frozen" in the fossil record (Coleoptera: Ripiphoridae)

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Entomology, 2011
Ten amber inclusions of male Ripidiinae (Coleoptera: Ripiphoridae) are reported from Early Miocene deposits of the Dominican Republic and compared with extant species of Neorrhipidius Viana, 1958 from Argentina and Paraguay and Quasipirhidius Zaragoza ...

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

Smoking prevalence and correlates among inpatients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder

open access: yesScientific Reports
Many studies have shown that cigarette smoking prevalence rate is high in patients with schizophrenia. Despite the strong association between smoking and schizophrenia, findings on the relationships between smoking, psychiatric symptoms and cognitive ...

Geology and petrology of Tertiary volcanic rocks of Sarbisheh perlite mine area (eastern Iran) and industrial applications

open access: yesJournal of Economic Geology, 2012
The study area is located at northwest of Sarbisheh in South Khorasan province and eastern border of Lut block. In this area, Tertiary (Eocene-Oligocene to Pliocene) volcanic rocks consisting of basaltic andesite, dacite, rhyodacite, vitreous rhyolite ...

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Preparedness for tertiary chemistry: multiple applications of the chemistry competence test for diagnostic and prediction purposes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
This is a post-print of an article published by the Royal Society of Chemistry available at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1039/C1RP90024B.The development of the Chemistry Competence Test was prompted by the extensive curriculum changes in the South African ...

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Gender and the tertiary music curriculum in Australia

open access: yes, 2007
The paper argues that women's music continues to be excluded in tertiary music curricula, translating into the virtual absence of their music on concert platforms.
