Abstract The clinical syndrome of tetanus occurs as a result of the action of the protein neurotoxin tetanospasmin on the CNS. The toxin is a 150-kDa protein produced within contaminated wounds by Clostridium tetani (3). The spores of this organism are widespread, particularly in the soil, where they are protected from direct sunlight.
