Tetanus is een ernstige maar gelukkig zeldzame ziekte. Sinds het invoeren van de vaccinatie tegen tetanus is het aantal ziektegevallen sterk gedaald. In de periode 1984-1996 werden in Nederland in totaal dertig gevallen van tetanus bij de inspectie aangegeven. Dit succes is het gevolg van een zeer effectief vaccinatieprogramma.

Twenty-seven patients were treated with neuromuscular blockade, nasotracheal intubation and intermittent positive pressure ventilation.
