Control of an Orbiting Platform Supported Tethered Satellite System

IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 1989
Abstract A mathematical model is proposed for studying the dynamics of the Tethered Satellite System (TSS) consisting of a plate-type space station from which a tether supported subsatellite is deployed or retrieved. The rigid body dynamics of the tether, subsatellite and space station are analyzed accounting for the mass of the tether as well as a ...

Tethered satellite systems: A challenge for mechanics and applied mathematics

GAMM-Mitteilungen, 2009
AbstractTethered satellite systems that is two or more satellites in orbit connected by thin long cables, pose a number of challenging problems in mechanics concerning modeling and derivation of the equations of motion and in applied mathematics, concerning the numerical simulation of their dynamics, deciding on stability of relative equilibria and the

Dynamics and control of tethered satellite systems

Acta Astronautica, 2008
Abstract Dynamics and control of two-body and n -body tethered satellites are considered. At first, nonlinear roll and pitch motions of two-body systems are examined. Then the effects of aerodynamic and electrodynamic forces on the stability of a tethered satellite are discussed. Various control schemes to stabilize the dynamics during retrieval

The tethered satellite system - An electrodynamic mission

27th Aerospace Sciences Meeting, 1989
The tethered satellite system, a joint U.S.-Italian project to develop a Space Shuttle-based facility for deploying satellites either radially toward or away from the earth to distances up to 100 km, is described with particular attention given to its first mission (TSS-1).

Stabilizing tethered satellite systems using space manipulators

Proceedings of IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS'94), 2002
The use of space manipulators to stabilize a two-body tethered satellite system (TSS) during the stationkeeping and retrieval phases, is considered. The uncontrolled motion of the system in the stationkeeping phase is marginally stable, while during the retrieval phase it is unstable.

Relative equilibria of tethered satellite systems and their stability for very stiff tethers

Dynamical Systems: An International Journal, 2001
We study the existence and stability of the relative equilibria of systems of two satellites joined by a tether. Since tethers used in practice are very stiff we consider a stiff tether as a perturbation of an inextensible tether. We show that the equations for relative equilibria and the stability conditions are continuous as stiffness approaches ...

I-V characteristics of the Tethered Satellite System

35th Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit, 1997
The TSS-1R science mission was conducted on the space shuttle STS-75 at the end of February 1996. During the flight, the Tethered Satellite was deployed to a distance of 19.7km and current was collected by the Satellite. Over the course of science operations, a rich dataset of current-voltage measurements was collected from instruments onboard both the

Dynamics and Control of Rotating Tethered Satellite Systems

Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets, 2007
The control problems of two different configurations of tethered satellite systems forNASA’s Submillimeter Probe of the Evolution of Cosmic Structure (SPECS) mission are studied and their control performances are compared. The configuration of main focus is the TetraStar model composed of three controlled spacecraft and three uncontrolled ...

The analysis on the motion stability of a tethered satellite system

Astrodynamics Conference, 1994
'he paper gives the dynamic models of a tethered satellite system in an elliptical orbit. In terms d the models, the stability is analised for the depioyment and retrieval motion in orbital plane. The condition of the equilibrium state being in existence IS obtained.
