Research and development of tethered satellite cluster systems

Proceedings. 2000 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS 2000) (Cat. No.00CH37113), 2002
We propose the concept of tethered satellite cluster systems, as an application of the RoboSat clusters. The system consists of some satellites joined by tethers, and keeps and changes the constellation with tension/length control of the tethers to perform various orbit service missions.

A DISCRETIZED MODEL FOR THE DYNAMICS OF A TETHERED SATELLITE SYSTEM AND APPLICATIONS

Mathematical Models and Methods in Applied Sciences, 1991
This paper deals with a simulation of a tethered satellite system where a discretized model of the cable is considered. The characteristics of a few space discretization procedures are compared while investigating the dynamics of two physically relevant models, namely the Space Pendulum and the Space String.

Tethered Satellite System control system design

3rd Tethers in Space/ Toward Flight International Conference, 1989
This paper discusses the control aspects of the Tethered Satellite System mission. The deployer controls system uses length-error and tension-error feedback to control in-plane libration, length, and length rate. The satellite's reaction control system is used to augment tether tension, control rates and attitude about the tether axis, and to damp in ...

Estimation and control of tethered satellite systems

Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics, 1995
This paper describes the analysis of a tethered system during the station-keeping phase. The system is composed of two small satellites connected by a long tether. The satellites are modeled as particles, and the tether is represented by eight rigid, massive rods. The angles between adjacent elements can vary with time.

A tether system for gravitational stabilization of satellites

Cosmic Research, 2010
The dynamics of a sufficiently complex system of gravitational stabilization is considered. The system includes a tether connection to increase restoring moment and an additional constructive element (adapter) to increase the efficiency of damping pendular oscillations of the system.

Study on the stability of Tethered Satellite System

Acta Astronautica, 2011
Abstract Tethered Satellite System has turned into a reality from theory, and has become a new research focus in the field of space science. However, the system’s stability will directly affect the success of the mission. In this paper, the system's stability is deeply studied.

Periodic motion in the tethered satellite system

Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics, 1996
The tethered satellite system (TSS) operating in an elliptic orbit may have a periodic motion. The configuration and stability of the limit cycle depend on the control algorithm and the orbital eccentricity. The size of the limit cycle increases as the orbital eccentricity increases.

The Italian participation to the tethered satellite system

Acta Astronautica, 1982
Abstract In this paper the Tethered Satellite System (TSS) is presented in its various aspects of scientific and applicative utilization, program development and technical realization. 1. First, the basic features of TSS are introduced, together with its potential applications which have been preliminarily proposed to NASA. 2.

Control of the vibrations of a tethered satellite system

Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, 2000
The authors discuss the landing capsule leaving the orbit by means of a tether without using jet engines. This system is modelled by symbolic dynamical equations of multibody systems. Active damping is provided by an actuator between the main body and the tether. The control parameters are optimized.

Design concept of a tethered satellite cluster system

Aerospace Science and Technology, 2020
Abstract As a unique configuration of satellite formation, the tethered satellite system has the advantage for space observation due to its flexible baseline. This paper addresses the concept of a tethered satellite cluster system (TSCS) that consists of a central satellite and several member satellites connected by rope or chain. Using the Clohessey–
