Genetics and Epigenetics of Mating Type Determination in Paramecium and Tetrahymena.

open access: yesAnnual Review of Microbiology, 2017
While sex is an ancient and highly conserved eukaryotic invention, self-incompatibility systems such as mating types or sexes appear to be derived limitations that show considerable evolutionary plasticity.

1+1 = 3: a fusion of 2 enzymes in the methionine salvage pathway of Tetrahymena thermophila creates a trifunctional enzyme that catalyzes 3 steps in the pathway. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Genetics, 2009
The methionine salvage pathway is responsible for regenerating methionine from its derivative, methylthioadenosine. The complete set of enzymes of the methionine pathway has been previously described in bacteria.

\u3cem\u3eASI1\u3c/em\u3e, a Gene Encoding a Novel Leucine Zipper Protein, Is Induced during Development of the Macronucleus in \u3cem\u3eTetrahymena\u3c/em\u3e [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Sexual reproduction in the ciliate Tetrahymena follows a complex developmental program involving the sequential regulation of dozens of genes. Genes that are up-regulated during post-zygotic development in Tetrahymena were isolated by subtractive ...

Activation of Caged Functional RNAs by An Oxidative Transformation

open access: yesChemBioChem, Volume 26, Issue 8, April 14, 2025.
RNAs containing 2‐thiouridine (2sUrd) in place of uridine (Urd) can exhibit loss of function. Treatment with hydrogen peroxide can convert 2sUrd to Urd. We show that a 2sUrd‐containing aptamer and ribozyme can exhibit recovery of function upon treatment with hydrogen peroxide, allowing for redox‐switched functional behavior.

The piggyBac transposon-derived genes TPB1 and TPB6 mediate essential transposon-like excision during the developmental rearrangement of key genes in Tetrahymena thermophila

open access: yesGenes & Development, 2016
Here, Cheng et al. present data from Tetrahymena that highlight a division of labor among ciliate piggyBac-derived genes, which carry out mutually exclusive categories of excision events mediated by either transposon-like features or RNA-directed ...

Effects of six pyrimidine analogs on the growth of Tetrahymena thermophila and their implications in pyrimidine metabolism.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2023
Tetrahymena are ciliated protists that have been used to study the effects of toxic chemicals, including anticancer drugs. In this study, we tested the inhibitory effects of six pyrimidine analogs (5-fluorouracil, floxuridine, 5'-deoxy-5-fluorouridine, 5-

The telomerase essential N-terminal domain promotes DNA synthesis by stabilizing short RNA-DNA hybrids. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Telomerase is an enzyme that adds repetitive DNA sequences to the ends of chromosomes and consists of two main subunits: the telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) protein and an associated telomerase RNA (TER). The telomerase essential N-terminal (TEN)

Machine Learning‐Enabled Drug‐Induced Toxicity Prediction

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 12, Issue 16, April 24, 2025.
Unexpected toxicity accounts for 30% of drug development failures. This review highlights ML innovations in predicting drug‐induced toxicity, emphasizing comparative analyses, interpretable algorithms, and multi‐source data integration. It categorizes toxicity types, summarizes ML models, and organizes key databases, offering strategies to address ...
