High Diversity and Abundance of Putative Polyphosphate-Accumulating Tetrasphaera-Related Bacteria in Activated Sludge Systems. [PDF]
The diversity of the putative polyphosphate-accumulating genus Tetrasphaera in wastewater treatment systems with enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) was investigated using the full-cycle rRNA approach combined with microautoradiography and histochemical staining. 16S rRNA actinobacterial gene sequences were retrieved from different full-scale

Tetrasphaera elongata sp. nov., a Polyphosphate-Accumulating Bacterium Isolated From Activated Sludge. [PDF]
A new meso-diaminopimelic acid-containing, gram-positive bacterium was isolated from an activated sludge reactor showing enhanced biological phosphorus removal activity. The isolate was an asporogenous oval to rod-shaped bacterium, but occasionally formed clumps. The Neisser staining was positive, suggesting intracellular polyphosphate granules.

Research advances of Tetrasphaera in enhanced biological phosphorus removal: A review
Water Research, 2019The processes of enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) have been widely applied in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). However, meeting the increasingly stringent effluent discharge standards requires a more stable EBPR performance. Under the circumstances, the identification of genus Tetrasphaera as potential phosphate accumulating organisms (

The return activated sludge sidestream process and the role of Tetrasphaera, a fermenting polyphosphate accumulating organism [PDF]
The return activated sludge sidestream (RSS) biological nutrient removal (BNR) configuration is suggested to combat phosphorus removal stability issues found in conventional BNR systems. RSS BNR does not employ an upfront anaerobic tank but sees a percentage (5-40%) of return activated sludge (RAS) sent to an anaerobic sidestream tank (SST).

Tetrasphaera are polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) that play an important role in enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) from wastewater. The effect of a wide range of temperature changes (1-30 °C) on phosphorus removal, metabolism and clade-level community structure of Tetrasphaera-dominated PAOs was investigated.

Tetrasphaera-related polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) are the key functional guilds for enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) systems. Their biomass enrichment can be enhanced by the nitrification inhibitor allylthiourea (ATU). However, the underlying assembly mechanism and the functional potential of the EBPR microbiome regulated by

Previous researches have recognized the vital role of Tetrasphaera elongata in enhanced biological phosphorus removal systems, but the underlying mechanisms remain under-investigated. To address this issue, this study investigated the metabolic characteristics of Tetrasphaera elongata when utilizing glucose as the sole carbon source.
