Solid-Texture Synthesis: A Survey

IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications, 2010
Solid textures are an efficient way to compactly represent 3D objects' external and internal appearance, providing practical advantages over classic 2D texturing. Two main methods exist for synthesizing solid textures. Procedural methods obtain colors through functions that algorithmically encode the texture's appearance and structural properties ...

Transition Texture Synthesis

Journal of Computer Science and Technology, 2008
Synthesis of transition textures is essential for displaying visually acceptable appearances on a terrain. This investigation presents a modified method for synthesizing the transition texture to be tiled on a terrain. All transition pattern types are recognized for a number of input textures.

Multiscale texture synthesis

ACM Transactions on Graphics, 2008
Example-based texture synthesis algorithms have gained widespread popularity for their ability to take a single input image and create a perceptually similar non-periodic texture. However, previous methods rely on single input exemplars that can capture only a limited band of spatial scales.

Interactive texture synthesis

Proceedings 11th International Conference on Image Analysis and Processing, 2002
The TEXRET (texture retrieval) system is a new texture database retrieval system, which is based on soft-computing technologies and that is under development. One of its main features is the generation of the requested textures when they are not found in the database, which allows a continuous growing of the database.

Skeletal Texture Synthesis

2009 Sixth International Conference on Computer Graphics, Imaging and Visualization, 2009
In this paper, we present an improved synthesis algorithm for both 2D and solid textures. Based on the wavelet-based multi-resolution pyramids and the improved optimization of texture synthesis, a coarse texture was synthesized as a skeleton. By adding detail information to the coarse texture, the higher resolution results can be generated.

Texture synthesis: textons revisited

IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, 2006
This paper introduces a technique for synthesizing natural textures, with emphasis on quasiperiodic and structural textures. Textures are assumed to be composed of three components, namely illumination, structure, and stochastic. The contribution of this work is that, in contrast to previous techniques, it proposes a joint approach for handling the ...

Patchwork Texture Synthesis

2022
In this technical report, a simple and fast method is described for the synthesis of texture from a sample. This method produces results comparable to those of more sophisticated methods. The basic principle employed is to piece together patches of a sample into a larger output texture. These patches are chosen at random, and have random shape.

Jigsaw Texture Synthesis

2007
Texture synthesis aims to seamlessly extend a sample texture. This can be achieved by reproducing the texture's recognisable patterns along with minimising the occurrences of undesirable image characteristics such as disjoint image features. Presently, patch-based methods have consistently produced the most impressive results.

TSL—A Texture Synthesis Language

The Visual Computer, 1988
TheTexture Synthesis Language (TSL) is a new high-level graphics language which provides tools for defining and generating regular and random (irregular) synthetic textures. The textures are used to fill in planar regions or can be mapped onto other surfaces.

Texton-based texture synthesis

SPIE Proceedings, 2004
A texton-based texture synthesis algorithm is presented in this paper. Based on the Markov Random Field (MRF) model, the algorithm takes a block randomly from a given sample texture to form a seed area in the center of the synthesized output texture, then synthesizes the output image pixel by pixel spirally along the edge of the seed area.
