The Motor Thalamus in Neurosurgery
Neurosurgery, 2006Abstract THE MOTOR THALAMUS is an important target for the treatment of tremor. It receives afferents from the cerebellum, globus pallidus internus, and substantia nigra and projects mainly to the motor cortex, premotor cortex, and supplementary motor area. Various nomenclatures have been proposed to subdivide the motor thalamus, none of

The thalamus is a structure at the center of each cerebral hemisphere which is a relay for sensory pathways, and for brain stem, cerebellar, and subcortical pathways to the cortex, as well as a relay between different cortical areas. In addition to the anatomy defined by these inputs, the thalamus is characterized by a well-defined arrangement of ...

The functional parcellation of the motor thalamus of primates has suffered from serious historical and technical drawbacks, which have led to extreme confusion. This is a problem when thalamic stereotaxy is again being use clinically. The cause usually imputed is the historical conflict between two main schools, the Vogt and the 'Anglo-American ...

Language, Cognition and the Thalamus
Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, 1974The clinical picture associated with various lesions of the thalamus is described. The effects of surgical Iesion in thalamus are reviewed in light of the author''s experience with VL thalamotomy, and in unilateral and bilateral pulvinectomy. The relation of thalamus to language and cognition is complex.

Limbic projections to the thalamus
Experimental Brain Research, 1973Degeneration density and topography in the thalamus of the squirrel monkey was studied following lesions in the septal area, fornix, and cingulate gyrus. It was found that the hippocampus projects more fibers to the anteroventral nucleus of the thalamus and the cingulate gyrus projects fewer fibers to it than does the septal area.

I t would be difficult to conclude other than that the thalamus is fundamentally involved in the generation of central pain. Even in the absence of knowledge regarding the thalamic pain syndrome and the painful sensations that arise from lesions and from electrical stimulation in regions posterior and ventral to the thalamus, 4,9.~7 the manifestations ...

The ventral thalamus, as usually defined in the adult brain, consists of the reticular nucleus, the zona incerta, and the ventral lateral geniculate nucleus (Fig. 15.1). To this, many authors add the nucleus of the fields of Forel. The subthalamic nucleus, though sometimes included in the ventral thalamus by older authors and by some current describers
