Discovery of a novel potexvirus in the seagrass Thalassia testudinum from Tampa Bay, Florida

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography Letters, 2019
Seagrass meadows are important coastal ecosystems that are declining worldwide. Given the profound impact of the microbiome on plant health, exploration of the seagrass microbiome is critical for proper ecosystem management and conservation.

Positive species interactions structure rhodolith bed communities at a global scale

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 100, Issue 1, Page 428-444, February 2025.
ABSTRACT Rhodolith beds are diverse and globally distributed habitats. Nonetheless, the role of rhodoliths in structuring the associated species community through a hierarchy of positive interactions is yet to be recognised. In this review, we provide evidence that rhodoliths can function as foundation species of multi‐level facilitation cascades and ...

Seagrasses in the Age of Sea Turtle Conservation and Shark Overfishing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Efforts to conserve globally declining herbivorous green sea turtles have resulted in promising growth of some populations. These trends could significantly impact critical ecosystem services provided by seagrass meadows on which turtles feed.

Field Notes on Thalassia Testudinum Growing Under Stress Conditions

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Environment, 2013
Field observations of Thalassia testudinum Banks ex Konig specimens growing under stress conditions revealed the presence of paracytic stomata on their leaves. Stomata are common to living plants in both land and freshwater environments, but are previously unknown in plants inhabiting salt water environments.

Invertebrate herbivores influence seagrass wasting disease dynamics

open access: yesEcology, Volume 106, Issue 1, January 2025.
Abstract Although invertebrate herbivores commonly impact terrestrial plant diseases by facilitating transmission of plant pathogens and increasing host susceptibility to infection via wounding, less is known about the role of herbivores in marine plant disease dynamics.

Characterization of the Mycobiome of the Seagrass, Zostera marina, Reveals Putative Associations With Marine Chytrids. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Seagrasses are globally distributed marine flowering plants that are foundation species in coastal ecosystems. Seagrass beds play essential roles as habitats and hatcheries, in nutrient cycling, and in protecting the coastline from erosion. Although many

Is light involved in the vertical growth response of seagrasses when buried by sand? [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
5 pages, 3 figures.Involvement of light in the vertical growth response of Cymodocea nodosa (Ucria) Ascherson seedlings to sand burial was tested by comparing the growth response of seedlings that were buried and seedlings that were buried but had the ...

Connectivity between coastal habitats of two oceanic Caribbean islands as inferred from ontogenetic shifts by coral reef fishes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Mangroves and seagrass beds are considered important nursery habitats for juveniles of coral reef fishes. Studies have mostly focused on the fish community of just one habitat, so the connectivity between different coastal habitats is often unclear.

Utilization of Algal Turf Scrubber Biomass in Sea Urchin (Lytechinus variegatus) Diets

open access: yesAquaculture Research, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
This study evaluated the growth indices in sea urchins fed varying levels of algal turf scrubber (ATS) biomass for the partial replacement of dietary menhaden fishmeal. Juvenile Lytechinus variegatus were fed four formulated diets with differentiating levels of ATS biomass (10%, 10%, 20%, and 50%).
