Comparison of GPR signals over simulated clandestine graves with domestic pigs (Sus Scrofa domesticus) and human remains

open access: yesJournal of Forensic Sciences, Volume 69, Issue 6, Page 2054-2068, November 2024.
Abstract Studies assessing the use of ground‐penetrating radar (GPR) for locating unmarked human graves commonly use pigs as proxies, with recent concerns about the adequacy of pigs as substitutes for humans. Also, there is little agreement on how to identify and describe GPR signals associated with graves.

Risk factors predicting subtypes of physical frailty incidence stratified by musculoskeletal diseases in community‐dwelling older adults: The SONIC study

open access: yesGeriatrics &Gerontology International, Volume 24, Issue 8, Page 797-805, August 2024.
Older age was a risk factor for subtypes of physical frailty assessed by walking speed and grip strength, but other risk factors differed according to the presence of musculoskeletal diseases (MSDs) and age. Preventive care for physical frailty in older adults should consider age and the presence of MSD.

Usefulness of the serum creatinine/cystatin C ratio as a blood biomarker for sarcopenia components among age groups in community‐dwelling older people: The SONIC study

open access: yesGeriatrics &Gerontology International, Volume 24, Issue 6, Page 529-536, June 2024.
The creatinine/cystatin C ratio (CCR) is significantly associated with grip strength but shows limited association with muscle mass and physical performance. We recommend careful consideration when evaluating sarcopenia components using specific blood biomarkers or derived indices.

The taphonomic impact of scavenger guilds in peri‐urban and rural regions of central and southern Alberta. Part I – Identification of forensically relevant vertebrate scavengers

open access: yesJournal of Forensic Sciences, Volume 69, Issue 2, Page 415-429, March 2024.
Abstract As a body decomposes in an outdoor environment, numerous taphonomic agents can act on the process of human decomposition. It is important to understand the impact of these agents as they can vary the rate of soft and hard tissue loss which may alter postmortem interval estimations.
