An Astro-Animation Class: Optimizing Artistic, Educational and Outreach Outcomes [PDF]
The authors investigate how teaching art and astronomy together has the potential to inspire new art forms, enhance scientific public outreach, and promote art and science education. The authors teach an astro-animation class at the Maryland Institute College of Art in partnership with NASA scientists.

AI-generated art perceptions with GenFrame -- an image-generating picture frame [PDF]
Image-generation models are changing how we express ourselves in visual art. However, what people think of AI-generated art is still largely unexplored, especially compared to traditional art. In this paper, we present the design of an interactive research product, GenFrame - an image-generating picture frame that appears as a traditional painting but ...

Art-Free Generative Models: Art Creation Without Graphic Art Knowledge [PDF]
We explore the question: "How much prior art knowledge is needed to create art?" To investigate this, we propose a text-to-image generation model trained without access to art-related content. We then introduce a simple yet effective method to learn an art adapter using only a few examples of selected artistic styles.

Monkeys get a silver in Abstract Art Olympics [PDF]
Experiment shows that art students prefer abstract art to monkey art in about two-third of the cases. Since the number is above 50%, some argue that abstract art is different and better than animal art. I compare this result with figure skating competitions, where on average 73% of judges prefer gold medalist to silver medalist.

Training on Art Composition Attributes to Influence CycleGAN Art Generation [PDF]
I consider how to influence CycleGAN, image-to-image translation, by using additional constraints from a neural network trained on art composition attributes. I show how I trained the the Art Composition Attributes Network (ACAN) by incorporating domain knowledge based on the rules of art evaluation and the result of applying each art composition ...

Autonomy, Authenticity, Authorship and Intention in computer generated art [PDF]
This paper examines five key questions surrounding computer generated art. Driven by the recent public auction of a work of `AI Art' we selectively summarise many decades of research and commentary around topics of autonomy, authenticity, authorship and intention in computer generated art, and use this research to answer contemporary questions often ...

The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Art Research: An Analysis of Academic Productivity and Multidisciplinary Integration [PDF]
This study investigates the transformative impact of artificial intelligence on art research by analysing data from 749 art research projects and 555,982 non art research projects, as well as 23,999 journal articles. We utilized the SciBERT model for text analysis on research funding proposals and the econometric model to evaluate AI impact on the ...

The smallest art gallery not guarded by every third vertex [PDF]
A polygonal art gallery can be observed by guards placed at one third of its corners. However, the strategy of placing guards at every third corner does not work for all art galleries. In this note, we provide an example of a nine-sided art gallery for which this strategy fails, and prove that this example is minimal.

Sensory Optimization: Neural Networks as a Model for Understanding and Creating Art [PDF]
This article is about the cognitive science of visual art. Artists create physical artifacts (such as sculptures or paintings) which depict people, objects, and events. These depictions are usually stylized rather than photo-realistic. How is it that humans are able to understand and create stylized representations?

Foregrounding Artist Opinions: A Survey Study on Transparency, Ownership, and Fairness in AI Generative Art [PDF]
Generative AI tools are used to create art-like outputs and sometimes aid in the creative process. These tools have potential benefits for artists, but they also have the potential to harm the art workforce and infringe upon artistic and intellectual property rights.
