Structural heredity in the casting of eutectic cast iron

open access: yesЛитьë и металлургия
It has been shown that the effect of structural inheritance in casting eutectic cast irons can be explained from the standpoint of nanostructured crystallization of foundry alloys. Proposed is a mechanism of structural heredity when casting eutectic cast

Measuring every particle's size from three-dimensional imaging experiments

open access: yes, 2012
Often experimentalists study colloidal suspensions that are nominally monodisperse. In reality these samples have a polydispersity of 4-10%. At the level of an individual particle, the consequences of this polydispersity are unknown as it is difficult to

Thermoelectric Modules Incorporating MgAgSb and Mg3(Sb,Bi)2 Synthesized Using a Melting Method

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A scalable synthesis method for a thermoelectric material of MgAgSb is established. A thermoelectric power module of MgAgSb/Mg3(Sb,Bi)2 is fabricated, showing the conversion efficiency of 7.4% at ΔT = 315 K. The performance is comparable to conventional Bi2Te3 modules when they are operated with an air‐cooled heat exchanger.

Coordinated optimization of visual cortical maps (II) Numerical studies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
It is an attractive hypothesis that the spatial structure of visual cortical architecture can be explained by the coordinated optimization of multiple visual cortical maps representing orientation preference (OP), ocular dominance (OD), spatial frequency,

Removing Homocoupling Defects in Alkoxy/Alkyl‐PBTTT Enhances Polymer:Fullerene Co‐Crystal Formation and Stability

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
PBTTT‐OR‐R, a C14‐alkoxy/alkyl‐PBTTT polymer derivative, is of substantial interest for optoelectronics due to its specific fullerene intercalation behavior and enhanced charge‐transfer absorption. Comparing this polymer with (S) and without (O) homocoupling defects reveals that PBTTT‐OR‐R(O) forms stable co‐crystals with PC61BM, while PBTTT‐OR‐R(S ...

Influence of Chemical Composition on Concentration Undercooling of Structural Steels [PDF]

open access: yesArchives of Foundry Engineering
The article studies the undercooling of steel melt around the solid particles, which is one of the main factors determining the rates of nucleation and growth of crystallization centers. Particularly, the effect of chemical composition on this factor for

Direct observation of crystallization and melting with colloids

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 2019
Significance This paper reports on colloid experiments that provide a unique 3D experimental view at the particle level of the fundamental mechanism by which liquids crystallize and crystals melt.
