Language Learning, 1968The grammatical analysis of definite noun phrases shows that they contain, at some level of interpretation, restrictive adjuncts. These restrictives are presupposed by occurrence of the definite article in much the same way as antecedent reference is presupposed by occurrence of a definite pronoun.
