Cover crop effects on μCT‐measured geometrical pore characteristics

open access: yesAgrosystems, Geosciences & Environment, 2022
Cover crops (CC) could improve soil physical, chemical, and biological properties; however, the micrometer scale quantification of geometric pore characteristics in CC soil is limited in the literature.

Decolonising Fiji: Reclaiming indigenous Fijian psychologies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Creating meaningfulness in an unstable, confusing environment can redirect one to sift through the chaos for the very basic, forgotten things in order to make sense of the world one lives in.

Dapagliflozin prevents methylglyoxal‐induced retinal cell death in ARPE‐19 cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Diabetic macular oedema is a diabetes complication of the eye, which may lead to permanent blindness. ARPE‐19 are human retinal cells used to study retinal diseases and potential therapeutics. Methylglyoxal is a compound increased in uncontrolled diabetes due to elevated blood glucose.

Over Time and Beyond Disney—Visualizing Princesses through a Comparative Study in India, Fiji, and Sweden [PDF]

open access: yesSocial Sciences, 2019
Disney animated princesses are broadcasted around the world through Disney Channel and its global affiliates as well as through numerous other networks that purchase distribution rights. In an attempt to provide diversity in the last 25 years, Disney has featured nonwestern princesses such as those in Aladdin (1992), Pocahontas (1995), Mulan (1998 ...

Nuclear pore links Fob1‐dependent rDNA damage relocation to lifespan control

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Damaged rDNA accumulates at a specific perinuclear interface that couples nucleolar escape with nuclear envelope association. Nuclear pores at this site help inhibit Fob1‐induced rDNA instability. This spatial organization of damage handling supports a functional link between nuclear architecture, rDNA stability, and replicative lifespan in yeast.

Old Wine In A New Bottle? Proposed Sugar Industry Restructuring and Land Conflict in Fiji [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The proposed restructure of Fiji's sugar industry has the potential to change fundamentally the incentives facing stakeholders and their interaction. How well the stated objective of 'unity in purpose' is achieved will depend on whether the causes of ...

Single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assays for high‐throughput DNA–protein interaction studies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We describe an optimised single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assay that visualises DNA–protein interactions in real time. Linear DNA fragments are tethered to a surface and stretched by buffer flow for fluorescence imaging. Using λ and φX174 DNA, this protocol enhances reproducibility and accessibility, providing a versatile approach for studying diverse ...

The evolution of a moderate energy coast in Holocene time, Pacific Harbour, Viti Levu, Fiji [PDF]

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics, 1990
Abstract In the absence of a fringing reef the Pacific Harbour coast of southern Viti Levu has evolved primarily under the influence of waves generated by the prevailing southeasterly trade winds. By c. 3800 yr B.P., a coastal embayment had been partially enclosed by the formation of a gravel storm beach ridge.

Exon 7 splicing of ERα predicts poor prognosis and increases phenotypic heterogeneity in luminal a subtype breast cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
ERα splice variant ERα∆7 lacks the C‐terminus, and its expression may change phenotypes of breast cancers. Our results showed that ERα∆7 is found in the luminal A subtype, and elevated ERα∆7 levels are linked to improved cell survival with lower proliferation and migration.

50/50 by 2020: poverty and redistributive politics in post-independence Fiji [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The affirmative action program launched by the Fiji Government in 2002 espoused a '50/50 by 2020' vision; that is, by the year 2020, some 50 per cent of all economic activities would be owned by the indigenous population.
