Radioactive contamination of Russia's Techa River

Environmental Science & Technology, 1993
From 1949 to 1956, the ecosystem of the Techa River in the Chelyabinsk region of Russia was contaminated by the discharge of liquid radioactive wastes from the radiochemical production complex [open quotes]Mayak.[close quotes] Further distribution of radionuclides resulted in contamination of riverside territories such as the settlement Muslyumovo and ...

[Radioecological situation at the villages of the Techa river].

Radiatsionnaia biologiia, radioecologiia, 2005
The Techa river was contaminated in 1949-1956 from the nuclear enterprise "Mayak". The investigations were carried out in flood plain of the Techa river in 1992-2001. 90Sr and 137Cs stores were calculated in the soil-vegetation cover. There is uneven character of the spatial radionuclides contamination of the investigated area.

Radioactive Contamination of the Techa River

1998
In radiation and other accidents, it is a major problem to evaluate integrated environmental exposure, since measurements are taken some time after the accident when radiation or other decay has considerably reduced the pollution to be measured. This deficiency in the data must be filled by models.

REVIEW OF HISTORICAL MONITORING DATA ON TECHA RIVER CONTAMINATION

Health Physics, 1999
The Mayak Production Association was the first Russian site for the production and separation of plutonium. The extensive increase in plutonium production during 1948-1955, as well as the absence of reliable waste-management technology, resulted in significant releases of liquid radioactive effluent into the rather small Techa River.

DOSIMETRY FOR MEMBERS OF THE EXTENDED TECHA RIVER COHORT

Health Physics, 2006
The undersigned and colleagues are creators and a critic of the Techa River Dosimetry System-2000 (TRDS-2000), which was the subject of a recent article by Balonov et al. This article presented a consensus on a review of the TRDS-2000 achieved following a workshop in December 2003.

Radioecological investigation of the Techa-Iset' river system

Russian Journal of Ecology, 2000
Data on the current radioecological situation in the Techa-Iset' river system, which was contaminated by radioactive wastes from the Mayak Production Association in the 1940s and 1950s, are discussed. Mathematical models are presented that describe the decrease in the contamination of water, bottom sediments, hydrobionts, and floodplain soils with an ...

FISH-based analysis of stable translocations in a Techa River population

International Journal of Radiation Biology, 1998
Measurements of symmetrical translocations by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) were performed for retrospective biodosimetry in a Techa River population exposed to external (gamma-rays) and internal (90Sr, 137Cs) irradiation.Chromosome analyses were carried out on peripheral lymphocytes from 73 radiation-exposed residents from settlements ...

The Techa River Cohort: Study Design and Follow-up Methods

Radiation Research, 2005
Residents living on the banks of the Techa River in the Southern Urals region of Russia were exposed to radioactive contamination from the Mayak plutonium production and separation facility that discharged liquid radioactive waste into this river.

Analysis of strontium metabolism in humans on the basis of the Techa river data

Radiation and Environmental Biophysics, 1997
Age and sex features of strontium metabolism have been analyzed on studies of the population residing on the banks of the Techa river which was contaminated by fission products during the years 1949-1956. Measurements of 90Sr body burden have been performed since 1974 using a whole-body counter, and these have made it possible to estimate age-specific ...

Cancer Mortality Among Techa River Residents and Their Offspring

Health Physics, 1996
This paper analyzes the data on leukemia and solid cancers of all types among 28,000 people exposed due to discharges of radioactive waste into the Techa River in the South Urals. Cancer mortality rates for the 33-y period since the beginning of the exposure have been estimated.
