A reconsideration of the external dose assessment for the Techa river population

Radiation and Environmental Biophysics, 2002
A new methodology is employed to infer the time course of the external dose rate that affected the Techa riverside population. This was accomplished using information on the radionuclide composition of released radioactive waste and from earlier and current data on the degree of the river floodplain contamination with (137)Cs.

Studies on the extended Techa river cohort: cancer risk estimation

Radiation and Environmental Biophysics, 2002
Initial population-based studies of riverside residents were begun in the late 1950s and in 1967 a systematic effort was undertaken to develop a well-defined fixed cohort of Techa river residents, to carry out ongoing mortality and (limited) clinical follow-up of this cohort, and to provide individualized dose estimates for cohort members.

Protracted Radiation Exposure and Cancer Mortality in the Techa River Cohort

Radiation Research, 2005
In the 1950s many thousands of people living in rural villages on the Techa River received protracted internal and external exposures to ionizing radiation from the release of radioactive material from the Mayak plutonium production complex. The Extended Techa River Cohort includes 29,873 people born before 1950 who lived near the river sometime ...

Cancer mortality and radiation risk evaluation for the Techa river population

Science of The Total Environment, 1994
The current nominal risk coefficients for radiation induced cancer are predominantly based on the follow-up of the atomic bomb survivors, i.e. a collective of persons exposed to a short duration, high dose rate exposure. It is one of the central issues in radiation protection, whether these data are representative also for protracted, low dose rate ...

137Cs contamination of Techa river flood plain in Brodokalmak settlement

Applied Radiation and Isotopes, 1999
137Cs contamination of the Techa river flood plain inside the Brodokalmak settlement has been mapped. The collimated scintillated detector technique was used for 137Cs deposit measurements. The 137Cs contamination is very heterogeneous. A comparison of this technique with the traditional sample method was performed at selected locations.

Geogenic and anthropogenic impacts on indoor radon in the Techa River region

Science of The Total Environment, 2016
Indoor radon concentration was studied in the 14 settlements located near the Techa River, which was contaminated by radioactive wastes in 1950-s. Results of the radon survey were used for analysis of the relationship between the indoor radon and main geologic factors (Pre-Jurassic formations, Quaternary sediments and faults), local geogenic radon ...

[The state of radioactive pollution in the Techa River].

Radiatsionnaia biologiia, radioecologiia, 2009
The concentration of radionuclides in the upper river water depends on radionuclides flow from the Techa Cascade of Reservoirs (TCR) with filtration waters and water of bypass canals. Further concentration dynamics over the river depends on floodplain and bottom sediments contamination level.

Solid Cancer Incidence in the Techa River Incidence Cohort: 1956–2007

Radiation Research, 2015
Previously reported studies of the Techa River Cohort have established associations between radiation dose and the occurrence of solid cancers and leukemia (non-CLL) that appear to be linear in dose response. These analyses include 17,435 cohort members alive and not known to have had cancer prior to January 1, 1956 who lived in areas near the river or

[Tritium in the Water System of the Techa River].

Radiatsionnaia biologiia, radioecologiia, 2016
The aim of the paper is to study modern tritium levels in various sources of the drinking water supply in the settlements situated in the riverside zone of the Techa. Almost everywhere the water entering water-conduit wells from deep slits (100-180 m) contains averagely 2-3 times higher tritium concentrations than the water from less deep personal ...

DOSE RECONSTRUCTION SYSTEM FOR THE EXPOSED POPULATION LIVING ALONG THE TECHA RIVER

Health Physics, 2000
The Mayak Production Association, which began operation in 1948, was the first facility in the former Soviet Union for the production of plutonium. Significant worker and population exposure occurred as a result of failures in the technological processes in the late 1940's and early 1950's. Members of the public were exposed via discharge of about 1017
