Indigenous Status and Outcomes in Deep Neck Space Infections: An ICU Cohort Study

ANZ Journal of Surgery, EarlyView.
Among 351 ICU patients with deep neck space infections, Indigenous status was independently associated with 1.41× longer hospital stay and 5.59× higher odds of 30‐day readmission, independent of traditional risk factors. In selected patients with severe LV dysfunction, Impella‐supported non‐cardiac surgery may provide a temporary hemodynamic bridge to otherwise prohibitive procedures. Published evidence remains limited to a small number of highly selected cases, supporting technical feasibility rather than comparative benefit or generalizable safety.
