The efficacy of toltrazuril for prevention of oriental theileriosis (Theileria orientalis Ikeda genotype) in Friesian calves

open access: yesAustralian Veterinary Journal, Volume 103, Issue 6, Page 322-329, June 2025.
The aim of this non‐blinded, randomised, controlled study was to determine the efficacy of toltrazuril for the prevention of oriental theileriosis in calves. Thirty calves were infected with Theileria orientalis Ikeda genotype through the application and retention of infected female bush ticks (Haemaphysalis longicornis). 15 Group 1 calves were treated

Description of a new actinosporean type from South African freshwater [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
The 1st report on actinospores described these organisms as parasites related to myxosporeans. For a long time this group of parasites was believed to represent an independent taxonomic entity.

Molecular epidemiology of Theileria parva in the field

open access: yesTropical Medicine & International Health, 1999
Summary Molecular tools based on seminested RFLP‐PCR techniques to characterize field parasites in bloodspots dried on filter paper permitted investigation of the extent and the dynamics of diversity of Theileria parva populations in the field. Parallel molecular studies explored the long‐term genome stability of various isolates by probing Southern ...

Fully Phased Population‐Prevalent East African Cattle BoLA‐I Alleles Determined Using PacBio HiFi Long‐Read Sequencing Represent Five Novel Specificities With Distinctive Peptide Binding Potential

open access: yesHLA, Volume 105, Issue 4, April 2025.
ABSTRACT Due to factors such as lower biosecurity, greater wildlife/farm animal interfaces, and environmental challenges, cattle in sub‐Saharan Africa are exposed to more diverse and intensive bacterial, viral and protozoan pathogen challenges than cattle in Europe and other high‐income regions of the world.

CRISPR/Cas system and its application in the diagnosis of animal infectious diseases

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, Volume 38, Issue 24, 31 December 2024.
CRISPR‐based diagnostic platforms have transformed the molecular diagnostic field due to their outstanding ultra‐sensitive nucleic acid detecting capabilities. In this review, we highlighted the application of currently available CRISPR integrated setups on the diagnosis of animal infectious diseases.

Protein trafficking through the endosomal system prepares intracellular parasites for a home invasion [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Toxoplasma (toxoplasmosis) and Plasmodium (malaria) use unique secretory organelles for migration, cell invasion, manipulation of host cell functions, and cell egress. In particular, the apical secretory micronemes and rhoptries of apicomplexan parasites

Isolation of Theileria parva (SAO Hill) and Theileria parva (West Kilimanjaro) and their cross-immunity with Theileria parva (Kasoba).

open access: yesRevue d'elevage et de medecine veterinaire des pays tropicaux, 1995
Two Theileria parva stocks were isolated from control cattle during East Cost fever (ECF) field immunization trials at SAO Hill and West Kilimanjaro in the southern and northern parts of Tanzania respectively. Both parasite stocks caused severe clinical ECF which required antitheilerial treatment for 3 of the 5 experimentally infected cattle.

Maintenance of Theileria parva parva infection in an endemic area of Kenya

open access: yesParasitology, 1986
SUMMARYThe maintenance of Theileria parva parva infection in an endemic area of Kenya on the shore of Lake Victoria was studied in the field and laboratory. High prevalences of antibodies against T. parva and T. mutans and intra-erythrocytic piroplasms were detected in local zebu (Bos indicus) cattle.

A Suite of Pathogens Detected in Ticks Sampled From Wildlife Hosts in Central Kenya

open access: yesAfrican Journal of Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 3, September 2024.
ABSTRACT Opportunistic sampling of ticks from animals during veterinary treatment offers important insights about wildlife exposure to pathogens. Here, we report pathogens and other tick‐borne organisms detected in ticks sampled from 10 animal species in and near Laikipia County, Kenya, in 2014–2016.
