Discrimination and simultaneous detection of two myxozoan parasites belonging to genus Thelohanellus by multiplex polymerase chain reaction

Thelohanellus kitauei and Thelohanellus hovorkai are myxozoan parasites pathogenic in cyprinid fish especially adult Israel carp and common carp. In the present study, the complete 18S rRNA-ITS1-5.8S rRNA-ITS2 sequences of these two Thelohanellus species were cloned with primers designed from information from Genbank and previous studies.

[The biology and pathogenicity of the carp parasite Thelohanellus nikolskii (Myxosporidia)].

The myxosporidian Thelohanellus nikolskii has been recorded in young of carp in fish-breeding ponds of Moldavia since 1982. Sporogenesis takes place from June to August. Single cysts with mature spores are found in winter and spring. The distribution of cysts in the host's population is of overdispersed character.

In the present study, the morphology and morphometric characterization of Thelohanellus niloticus sp. nov., a new myxozoan belonging to genus Thelohanellus Kudo, 1933 (Myxosporea, Bivalvulida) infecting the gills of Labeo niloticus (Osteichthyes, Cyprinidae), were described for the first time from the River Nile at El-Minia Governorate, Egypt.
