Theoretical Wisdom

Abstract Chapter 4 defends the claim that theoretical wisdom (or sophia) is the ultimate motivational object of intellectual virtues. It begins by arguing that intellectual virtues aim at “deep explanatory understanding of epistemically important subject matters.” This leads, first, to a discussion of the nature of “epistemic importance.”
