A theory of a theory of the smartphone [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Cultural Studies, 2021
This article addresses the consequences of theory in social science. It suggests that theory has become fetishized and contributes to class differentiation as most people are excluded from its increasingly obfuscating form. Fetishism implies that what used to be a means for clarifying and explaining the world has become an end in itself.

Dispersive analysis of the Primakoff reaction $$\gamma K \rightarrow K \pi $$ γ K → K π

open access: yesEuropean Physical Journal C: Particles and Fields, 2021
We provide a dispersion-theoretical representation of the reaction amplitudes $$\gamma K\rightarrow K \pi $$ γ K → K π in all charge channels, based on modern pion–kaon P-wave phase shift input.

“Theory” in Theory and Practice [PDF]

open access: yesEvolution: Education and Outreach, 2008
A central obstacle to accepting evolution, both among students and the general public, is the idea that evolution is “just a theory,” where “theory” is understood in a pejorative sense as something conjectural or speculative. Although scientists and textbooks constantly explain that the scientific use of “theory” is quite different, the pejorative use ...

Functional renormalization group study of the Anderson–Holstein model

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2014
We present a comprehensive study of the spectral and transport properties in the Anderson–Holstein model both in and out of equilibrium using the functional renormalization group (fRG).

Dispersion relation for hadronic light-by-light scattering: pion pole

open access: yesJournal of High Energy Physics, 2018
The pion-pole contribution to hadronic light-by-light scattering in the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon (g − 2) μ is fully determined by the doubly-virtual pion transition form factor. Although this crucial input quantity is, in principle, directly

Analysis of rescattering effects in $$3\pi $$ 3 π final states

open access: yesEuropean Physical Journal C: Particles and Fields, 2023
Decays into three particles are often described in terms of two-body resonances and a non-interacting spectator particle. To go beyond this simplest isobar model, crossed-channel rescattering effects need to be accounted for.

Quark-mass dependence in $$\omega \rightarrow 3\pi $$ ω→3π decays

open access: yesEuropean Physical Journal C: Particles and Fields, 2018
We study the quark-mass dependence of $$\omega \rightarrow 3\pi $$ ω→3π decays, based on a dispersion-theoretical framework. We rely on the quark-mass-dependent scattering phase shift for the pion–pion P-wave extracted from unitarized chiral perturbation
